Start Small Think Big is a non-profit on a mission to catalyze entrepreneurship in marginalized communities. Founded 10 years ago in New York City, we have successfully expanded our work to San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose. We are now in the midst of another period of rapid growth and expansion, as we work to replicate our model nationally and grow existing programs to serve larger numbers of entrepreneurs. We are also currently undergoing an exciting rebrand, with the goal of expanding our impact and increasing support for small businesses, centering community voice, , and celebrating what it means to be all for small. As we scale our work, we are engaging in an intentional process to identify, understand, and address bias at all levels and advance equity, especially racial equity, from the inside out.

Start Small Think Big is seeking a part-time Research Assistant to provide support for a Kauffman funded research project seeking to understand financial planning as a barrier to entrepreneurship for small business owners from marginalized and low income communities. This three year project focuses on testing a financial analysis tool and audit process developed by Start Small Think Big, to help these small business owners, and the programs supporting them, determine if potential ventures are feasible before investing more resources into building the business. The Research Assistant will work closely with the Impact Assessment Manager to analyze the data collected, and collaborate to produce a paper with the final results of this project.

The position is project based, and is expected to span 5 months (Sept 2021 – Jan 2022) on a part time basis (approximately 20 hours per week).

Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct data management and analyses (qualitative and quantitative) using Excel and Statistical software
  • Conducting literature reviews
  • Support writing and editing of final paper
  • Participating in team meetings as necessary to support project work

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or current graduate student in Economics, Economic Development, Public Policy, Data Science or related field
  • Demonstrated competence in oral and written communication
  • Must be organized, attentive to detail, and possess a positive and professional demeanor
  • Experience with academic research and research papers
  • Familiarity with Python, Stata, or any other coding languages / statistical software
