Request for Equity Consultant: Assessment & Strategic Plan

INTRODUCTION

As You Sow is a Berkeley-based nonprofit that has been empowering shareholders to hold corporations accountable for the past 29 years. We are seeking proposals to assist in developing a comprehensive Racial Justice, Diversity, Inclusion, Belonging and Equity (RJDIBE) program that moves us forward in creating plans and practices that allow our employees and board to establish and maintain a diverse, equitable, and welcoming culture. As You Sow actively seeks to hire and partner with diverse groups in all areas of operations. SUMMARY OF PURPOSE

In this RFP, we invite qualified consultant(s) to submit a proposal outlining how they would conduct an assessment, through the RJDIBE lens, of As You Sow’s culture and processes: employees, management, and board. Additionally, As You Sow is looking for an outline on how that assessment would be used to formulate a multi-year strategic plan to leverage our strengths and address shortcomings. Additional opportunities on the Implementation of said plan will be available in the future when another RFP will invite qualified candidates to work with As You Sow in a multi-year partnership.

AS YOU SOW’S PRIOR WORK WITH DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION (DEI)

Three years ago, As You Sow took steps by hiring a DEI consultant. During this time, we made progress including but not limited to the creation of an internal Equity Committee, hosting staff workshops/trainings, improving equitable and transparent decision making, and building a base language and understanding around RJDIBE. As You Sow wants to continue to expand and integrate RJDIBE tools and practices into the fabric of the organization.

SCOPE OF SERVICE/DELIVERABLES

1. Conduct an updated and organization-wide assessment (qualitative and quantitative) of current practices, strengths, and potential gaps in the areas of RJDIBE. This work should include:

  • A work plan describing your philosophy, methodologies, and approaches
  • Detailed description of deliverables and outcomes
  • Substantive examples of providing these services (audits or assessments) for similar organizations including the ability to affect real change
  • Evaluation of prior DEI assessment data
  • Review of external communications materials, board recruitment practices, and development strategies
  • Review operational policies, operational procedures, and hiring/retention practices
  • Conducting anonymous surveys and/or listening tours of board, management, and staff

2. Produce a cohesive, multi-year RJDIBE strategic plan with both internal and external benefits that reflects the needs and priorities identified in the assessment. Plan should include:

  • Recommendations for specific measurable outcomes (short and long term), clear tasks, deliverables, and milestones and timetables. Recommendations and/or suggestions for the integration, expansion, evaluation, and monitoring of the strategic plan
  • Clear metrics that substantiate recommendations and/or suggestions.,
  • Integration of the organization’s vision for RJDIBE in our public messaging.
  • CEO and Board commitment statement to RJDIBE to be used internally and externally
  • Updated hiring strategy to incorporate RJDIBE lens
  • Development of RJDIBE language booklet to assist staff with writing projects
  • New Employee and Board Member RJDIBE onboarding curriculum
  • Processes that can accommodate a virtual platform
  • Policy development and a framework for As You Sow to eventually carry on this work independently

PROPOSAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Company name, person of contact, physical & mailing address, email, phone, etc.

2. A brief description of the firm or individual to provide services, including the number of years in operation, any professional licenses or certifications held by individuals and/or firm, proof of professional liability insurance, and any services that can be provided outside of the RFP

3. Name, contact information, and brief resumes or bios of those who would be providing services as we are looking for an ability to commit specific staff to certain projects

4. Describe familiarity with our region and industry

REFERENCES

Include three client references with contact details

TIMELINES

1. Include proposed fees and a detailed proposal budget

2. Identify additional resources required for support, if any (ex: sub-contractors)

3. Outline a general timeline from start to completion (approx.)

Salary
