Primary Responsibilities:

The role of the Literacy Outreach Coordinator is to increase awareness of Literacy Volunteers of Greater New Haven (LV) core programs: ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and Basic Literacy for English speakers with low reading skills. This will involve doing outreach, in-person and remotely, into a variety of Greater New Haven and Meriden and Wallingford community organizations, recruiting students needing literacy services, and adult volunteers to be tutors for these programs. The Literacy Outreach Coordinator will use a variety of strategies to increase community awareness about LV literacy services with the goal of increasing student and tutor enrollment for the Greater New Haven and Meriden/Wallingford Literacy Programs. 


Position type:

This is a part-time position, 25 hours per week for 40 weeks, Sept – June (academic year). The position will involve extensive community outreach traveling to various locations in Greater New Haven area, Meriden, and Wallingford. This position works under the supervision of the Executive Director.

Hourly Rate: $20-22/hour

Responsibilities Include:

1. Increase awareness of LV programs utilizing a variety of approaches to recruit students and adult volunteers to become tutors.

2. Outreach, in-person and remotely, into a variety of community organizations (libraries, basic needs assistance programs, community centers, health programs, churches, etc.) spending approximately 1-2 hours weekly on-site at each location.

3. Interface with organization staff and engage their clients/patrons to inform them about LV programs; register students on-site for ESOL and Basic Literacy programs; provide information and referral when necessary.

4. Represent LV at local community events where there would be opportunities to display LV program materials as well as engage the public and increase community awareness about LV services.

5. Assist with the creation of promotional material about LV programs to develop an increased awareness of programs for students and potential tutors.

6. Develop new and innovative ways to reach various segments and neighborhoods in Greater New Haven, Meriden, and Wallingford.

7. Interface with LV Marketing Committee, Program Managers, Operation Manager, and possibly Board members.

8. Track all students, adult volunteers, and agency contacts engaged at all outreach sites and prepare reports to document outcomes of outreach and various statistical information monthly.

9. Attend staff meetings to report progress; seek assistance from Program Managers when necessary.

10. Meet with Executive Director on a routine basis.

11. Carry out other responsibilities when necessary.

REQUIREMENTS:

Bi-lingual abilities are highly preferred. The position requires cultural sensitivity, strong communication, and excellent organization and interpersonal skills. Candidates must be able to work independently and with confidence. Candidate must have some proficiency in Windows/MS Office as well as Google and social media applications. Experience in marketing, networking, and community building is preferred. Some knowledge of Greater New Haven and Meriden/Wallingford and/or ability to learn about these communities. College degree and 1 - 3 years of related experience preferred.
