Who We Are: Founded in 1806, the Onondaga County Medical Society (OCMS) represents a diverse group of medical students, residents, and physicians from across all specialties and in all settings. For two hundred and fifteen years, the Medical Society has promoted the ethical and competent practice of medicine in our region and has been at the forefront of every public health initiative or crisis this community has faced. We offer physicians the individual support and resources to be successful in their careers and to provide high-quality medical care to patients. Working together with organizations across the state and nation, the Medical Society offers the collective mechanism and expertise for effective systems change. Who We Are Looking For:  The Onondaga County Medical Society is seeking a strategically minded individual with relationship-building skills, financial acumen, advocacy experience, creativity, and sound judgement to lead our organization. This is an exciting opportunity for the right person to provide leadership and representation to the physician community during a time when the need for their expertise and voice is most acute. This is a flexible position that allows for a hybrid of both remote and office hours, requiring some in-state travel and occasional evening and weekend commitments. 

Qualifications: The successful candidate will be innovative, dynamic, and able to combine strong experience in member engagement and skill in nonprofit operations with a mission-driven focus on physician advocacy and public health. Bachelor’s and/or advanced degree in Business Management, Health Law or Public Health preferred, with a minimum of 3-5 years of management, nonprofit experience. Experience in health care or association management field is preferred.  Extensive and specifically related work experience may be substituted in lieu of formal education. Strong oral and written communication skills required. Must be familiar with medical issues or local healthcare community and comfortable discussing them. Must be a consensus builder, have the ability to balance multiple demands, possess strong leadership skills and be extremely flexible. Must possess the ability to serve as a strong physician and patient advocate. 

What You Will Do:


·    Provide executive support to the OCMS Executive Committee and Board of Directors, including identifying and cultivating physician leadership and diversity.

·       Keep Board informed on issues, needs and operation of OCMS and offer professional advice and recommendations, based on appropriate analysis, to Board on items requiring board action.

·       Coordinate all activities of the Executive Committee, Nominating Committee, Legislative Committee, Finance/Audit Committee, and miscellaneous task forces and ad hoc committees. 


·       Oversee all budget and finance decisions, evaluating financial needs and making appropriate budget recommendations to the Executive Council, appropriately managing funds and following adequate accounting controls.

·       Provide support and oversight to OCMS personnel, cultivating an environment of life-long learning and performance improvement and evaluation

·      Identify staffing needs in a changing environment and fill in accordance with budget constraints.

·      Conceive of and execute member recruitment campaigns to increase all types of diversity in membership and increase representation among early career and employed physicians.

·      Maintain the OCMS member database and website, ensuring its accuracy for billing and member communications and its effectiveness as a tool for member outreach and cultivation.

·       Develop and design communication and marketing materials, both online and print, for engaging current members and increasing the visibility of OCMS among physicians and in the broader community.

·       Forge partnerships with other county and specialty societies, including shared services and consolidation of back office functions.

Policy and Programming

·       Conceive of and directly coordinate or oversee all events related to member engagement, public health outreach, fundraising, and continuing education programming for members and their staff.

·      Evaluate on an ongoing basis which activities further the mission and operation of the organization and which have the greatest appeal to members and highest value to the community.

·      Oversee County participation within the Medical Society of the State of New York activities and facilitate OCMS member engagement in MSSNY governance and policy making.

·       Facilitate OCMS advocacy efforts, including developing and maintaining relationships with local, state, and national leaders, sharing Medical Society policy positions with elected leaders, and ensuring physician voices are included wherever healthcare decisions or policy is made.

·       Field inquiries from print and broadcast media and coordinate physician spokespersons, serving as OCMS spokesperson along with OCMS President, Past President, or President-Elect. 

·      Serve as primary interface between OCMS and community organizations, including insurance companies, hospitals, businesses, independent practice associations, private practices, and other health related organizations and constituents.

Transformational Leadership

·       Pursue new sources of funding, including writing grants, developing earned income streams, soliciting individual donations and corporate sponsorships, and finding novel sources of revenue to supplement member dues.

·       Be responsible for recruitment and engagement of physician members and their staff members or the institutions that employ them, demonstrating value of Medical Society membership and importance of the unified voice of organized medicine.

·      Identify and pursue opportunities for collaboration across the State and within the region, actively seeking out ways to streamline operations in pursuit of share goals and increased effectiveness.

·       Lead the Executive Council and members in discerning how OCMS needs to evolve and adapt to a changing healthcare environment to best attract and represent physicians and serve the community.
