Description

Sidwell Friends School, a co-educational Quaker day school in N.W. Washington, DC, seeks a full-time Maintenance Custodian. The Custodian will occasionally provide support at the School’s Bethesda, MD campus. 



The Custodian is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the physical plant of the school and is expected to be available for school programs that require Buildings and Grounds support. Duties also include, but are not limited to, repairs, light construction, assembly of items purchased for the school, custodial work, lightbulb & filter replacement, grounds work, furniture moving, mechanical upkeep and painting. Winter storms require clearing of snow and ice from parking lots and walkways. The Custodian is further responsible for making preparations for the many events held on the campus requiring set up of tables, chairs, and other items. This also includes take down and storage of furniture and equipment at the conclusion of the event. The Custodian must be available as a maintenance contact for school events and outside groups that use the facilities during off hours or weekend shifts. He/she will also be tasked with delivering packages and conveying other heavy items around campus around both the DC and Maryland campuses. Items occasionally will need to be picked up from, or delivered to vendors around the city. The Custodian will be responsible for keeping tools and machinery in good working order to ensure safe, quality work. Equipment may need cleaning, organizing, painting, and minor repair.



This is a moderately supervised position in which the employee will be expected to handle a wide variety of tasks involving assorted skills. A minimum of 2-3 years of maintenance “handy-man” experience is required. Familiarity with hand tools and the specialized tools used in the building trades is also required, along with knowledge of regulations and basic safety procedures for working with chemicals, moving parts, cutting tools and ladders. The position will also be required to have skill in the operation of vehicles and motorized equipment. Strong communication skills and the ability to interact with the broader team, colleagues across the school as well as others in the school community is also essential. A high school diploma or equivalent is required.



This is a full-time 40 hours/week position may include shifts on evenings and weekends. Occasional overtime will be required to complete work when students and faculty are not present. Emergencies, snow clearing and after school events may also necessitate evening or weekend hours. Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all types of weather.
