Organization Summary

The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation (STBF) is a private grant-making foundation based in Omaha, Nebraska. The Foundation has two missions: to prevent unintended pregnancy and ensure access to safe abortion in the U.S. and globally and to help Nebraska students attend and succeed in college. With annual spending of over $500 million, it is one of the largest private donors supporting this work.

The Finance Director will join the Foundation at a significant inflection point. Over a year ago, the Board made the decision to spend down the entirety of the Foundation’s assets over a period of 12-15 years. While the Foundation has not yet entered this phase, which will be triggered by the death of its co-benefactor, Mr. Warren Buffett, the decision has profound implications for the Foundation’s operations.

Job Description Summary

The Finance Director will report directly to the President and will be an integral part of the President’s senior leadership team, which includes Directors from other units within the Foundation. The senior leadership team provides input on cross-Foundation issues, philosophy and strategy.  

Responsibilities will include accounting, finance, grants management tasks, and oversight and management of the Foundation’s salary and benefits systems as follows:

Core Responsibilities

1.      Grants Management: Post grant awards to the general ledger. Manage grant payments: determine payment method, cash, wire or stock, and pay grants as requested. Post grant payments and notify grantees of payments. Adjust grant balances as needed.

2.      Financial Management & Taxes: Maintain depreciation, equipment, leasehold improvements, deferred rent, etc. schedules for incorporation into the monthly financial statements. Maintain returned contributions, interest income, rent income, capital gains, unrealized gain/loss, appreciation/depreciation on donated stock, contributions paid, grants payable schedules for incorporation into the monthly financial statements. Prepare monthly financial statements. Track the fair market value of securities and cash assets monthly. Reconcile bank account monthly.

3.      Payroll & Staff Salary Management: Supervise or run payroll bi-weekly. Track state payroll tax changes and notify our payroll service. Post payroll to general ledger and calculate benefit postings for the bank reconciliation. Calculate salary amounts for employees based in overseas and transmit to our payroll service. Transmit payroll funds for employees based overseas and post to the general ledger. Run bi-weekly benefits reports for posting to the general ledger.

4.      Group and General Liability Insurance: Meet with our insurance broker annually to secure health, dental, vision, life, long term care and long-term disability insurance coverage General Liability Insurance. Meet with our insurance broker annually to secure general liability and workers comp insurance. Complete the annual salary audit for the workers comp policy.

5.      Staff Salary Management & Retirement: Obtain annual salary and benefits compensation from the Council on Foundations. Notify Directors when employees are due for evaluations. Oversee the Foundation’s retirement plan and maintain the third-party administrator relationship. Prepare annual census and testing reports, and reconcile 401k contributions from the prior year

6.       Audit, 990 Tax Return, Cash Management & Payables: Schedule audit and prepare worksheets for auditors. Review final draft audit and post adjusting journal entries. Monitor Foundation cash balance. Serve as back-up for accounts payable.

7.      People Management: Lead and direct the team responsible for payroll, administration, reconciliation, office management and various accounting, finance and operations related duties. Fosters a diverse, equitable and inclusive practices to create a work environment where everyone can do their best work in contributing towards our impact.

The Finance Director must be a visionary, passionate leader who has an outstanding track record of collaborative, cross cutting value-add influence in finance related roles of increasing responsibility. They must be prepared to be a “player and a coach” in a lean, all-encompassing role with a mix of leadership, management and administrative duties. Additionally, we seek:


  1. Demonstrated ability to lead people and teams to effectively achieve clear, yet complex goals and objectives. 
  2. Demonstrated ability to work with efficiency, diplomacy, and flexibility particularly as part of a team and with strong judgment and discernment. Experience working on teams with diverse cultural and professional backgrounds.
  3. Exemplary written and verbal communication skills; ability to effectively facilitate, manage and summarize divergent points of view to advance the thinking of the group.
  4. Demonstrated ability to set priorities, manage multiple tasks/deadlines, and adapt to changes.
  5. Ability to effectively explain key financial concepts to individuals without accounting and finance knowledge.
  6. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.


Required Education & Experience

1.      Minimum eight years of experience and bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or a related field.

2.      Demonstrated performance in accounting and knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)

3.      Experience of final responsibility for the quality and content of financial data and reports

4.      Team leadership experience


Preferred Experience

1.      Experience with a nonprofit organization managing multiple restricted foundation and/or government grants allocated to multiple programs

2.      Payroll and benefit administration
