The SSRC’s Finance Department seeks a Senior Accountant, who will have overall responsibility for the general ledger system. This position will report directly to the Finance and Accounting Manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Complete monthly investments and banking account reconciliations.
Prepare fund transfers between cash and investment accounts and prepare month-end journal entries.
Coordinate (with the Finance and Accounting Manager) the year-end audit, including preparation of schedules and other documents for auditors; several schedules are maintained and updated on a monthly basis.
Monitor, record, and reconcile yearly contributions spreadsheet.
Review and analyze monthly balance sheet accounts (cash, investments, and payroll accounts).
Monitor all banking transactions on a daily basis and research/resolve any banking discrepancies.
Review and supervise accounts payable, including ACH and wire transactions, check payments, and fellowship payments.
Review accounts-payable transaction data for accuracy, adequateness of documentation, and conformity to the chart of accounts.
Review and release ACH/wire transactions and troubleshoot returned transactions.
Operate MIP accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger software modules.
Serve as the backup for the accounts payable/payroll position.
Additional responsibilities and projects may be assigned as directed.
QUALIFICATIONS
BA/BS degree in finance or accounting.
Approximately 5–7 years of accounting experience in a nonprofit environment.
Strong background supervising accounts payable and bank reconciliation.
Five years of experience preparing or monitoring electronic banking transactions.
Proven experience managing an investment portfolio is highly preferred.
Ability to take initiative and respond flexibly to changing demands.
Strong understanding of accounting theory and principles.
Ability to meet deadlines and work independently with minimal supervision.
Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
Ability to work collaboratively and manage numerous projects simultaneously.
Extensive experience with fund accounting software, such as MIP or a similar product.
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Salary range: $75,000 to $85,000 commensurate with experience. This position is based in New York City, with the option to work from home or from the SSRC office at the employee’s discretion, aside from two mandatory in-person meetings each year.
