 LOCATION: Chicagoland, Illinois

REPORTS TO: Deputy Director, Individual Philanthropy

ASSIGNMENT TYPE: Regular, FTE 40 hrs/week

Americares is a health-focused relief and development organization that responds to people affected by poverty or disaster with life-changing health programs, medicine and medical supplies. Since it was established in 1979, Americares has provided more than $17 billion in aid to 164 countries including the United States, making us the world’s leading nonprofit provider of donated medicine and medical supplies. Each year, we reach more than 90 countries and all 50 U.S. states with more than $900 million in innovative health programs and quality medical aid.

Americares dedicated Development team has the opportunity, every day, to engage in work with a purpose that contributes to achieving our strategic vision. It is an exciting time for Americares as we embark on the next ambitious chapter of our evolution, calling for aspirational growth in programming, resource acquisition and operational excellence. We are engaging in this work in the context of the devastating Covid-19 pandemic, which threatens the health, lives, and livelihoods of millions worldwide. To respond, Americares is providing equitable access to care, striving to vaccinate as many people as possible, and focusing our efforts on providing services to underrepresented populations. We are also mobilizing our global roster of trained and ready emergency responders, including doctors and nurses, to meet this critical moment.

Building on our U.S. regional strategy, the Chicago Director of Development will design and implement strategies to broaden the cultivation of current and prospective major donors in Chicagoland and the Midwest, with particular emphasis on generating larger gifts, expanding the capacity of existing donors, and building a pipeline of new donors. The scope of responsibilities includes raising funds in this region, maintaining relationships with key donors and stakeholders, building Americares’s community in and around Chicago and the Midwest, running a local leadership group, and supporting relationships with corporate partners and US partner clinics in the Chicago region.

The Director will be part of a broader Development Team and sit within the Individual Philanthropy team, which raises approximately $18 million annually, and collaborates closely with the Strategic Partnerships and Direct Response teams to raise the organization’s budget of $48 million for FY22. While Development staff are concentrated around our headquarters in Stamford, CT and the Tri-State region, we have dedicated fundraising staff in Seattle, and the Bay Area, and the position will work remotely. The Director will effectively collaborate with other team members within Development (Individual Philanthropy officers, Strategic Partnerships, Direct Response, and Marketing and Communications teams) in order to accomplish program objectives.

Americares’ approach is to make transformative programmatic investments in thousands of local health centers, rally others to support them, and advocate on their behalf. Americares has an unparalleled global network that supports over 4,000 health centers in 93 countries and global offices in Colombia, El Salvador, Haiti, India, Liberia, Nepal, the Philippines, Tanzania and the United States, including Puerto Rico. In the United States, we maintain a network of nearly 1,000 safety net health care providers across all 50 states. A strong and expanding network of over 200 pharmaceutical and medical supply corporations additionally enable Americares to provide medicines, medical supplies, personal care products, medical equipment and technology.

In Illinois, Americares collaborates with free and charitable clinics, federally qualified health centers and other health care organizations to serve residents without access to care. Active in the state since 2011, we have 35 partner clinics, including 8 in the Chicagoland area. Americares delivered over $2.7 million worth of medicines and supplies to our Illinois network last year, nearly tripling our 2015 total of $989,000.

Active since 2017, the Chicago Leadership Council is a subset of the national Americares Leadership Council, currently comprised of ten individuals who support philanthropy, advocacy and community events that help save lives and improve health for people affected by poverty and disaster across the globe. The group advances the mission of Americares by contributing financially to Americares’ work, introducing their networks, promoting the organization’s message and concerns in their communities, and lending their professional expertise to help Americares build a regional presence.

The Chicago Director will work closely with the Chicago Leadership Council and Americares U.S. Program staff to leverage our work with donors and prospects.
