 The Community Programs Assistant works together with the Community Programs Coordinator to oversee the day-to-day functions of the Community Assistance Programs. Our Community Assistance Programs focus on keeping people and pets together via low cost and/or free spay/neuter programs, vet assistance grants, safekeeping programs, community vaccination clinics and researching resources and outreach for pet owners in need. In addition, the Community Programs Assistant helps to oversee the National Spay Day Event (including content, publication and electronic/online distribution), coordinates program billing and follow up on all community assistance programs and represents the League at various community events throughout Arlington and the local region. This position is based in Arlington, Virginia.


Reporting Relationships:

This position reports to the Director of Community Support and works closely with all members of the Community Support Team. The Community Programs Assistant will also work closely with League staff, volunteers, and the public.


Responsibilities:

· Coordinates low-cost and free spay/neuter programs

· Coordinates national spay day campaign efforts

· Coordinates veterinary assistance grant program and follow up on spay/neuter requirements

· Coordinates HELP (Housing Emergency Lifeline for Pets) program

· Coordinates and implements community vaccination clinics

· Assists with pet food bank procedures and data collection as needed

· Works with animal control to assist clients who have been identified as needing our services

· Maintains database/billing system and collects/processes payments for clients

· Coordinates with participating vets regarding billing issues

· Researches and maintains up-to date list of area low-cost veterinarians, resources, and programs

· Serves as a point of contact for Arlington County and other locally based public assistance programs to cross promote services/resources relevant to pet owners

· Speaks on behalf of and represents the League both within the shelter and at external events to promote shelter programs and mission

· Completes cross training and is comfortable with all functions of the Animal Services desk

· Works 8-10 hours a week on the Animal Services desk

· Performs additional duties as deemed necessary and assigned


External Relations:

This position is required to interact directly with the public working and volunteers on a regular basis.


Required Qualifications:

· 2+ years of professional and customer service work experience preferably in a similar role

· Ability to set priorities, develop routines and manage a varied workload

· Readiness to assume multiple duties and tasks

· Ability to work independently as well as with others in a wide variety of circumstances

· Ability to maintain composure in stressful and sensitive situations while in the public eye

· Excellent writing skills with the ability to condense and clarify content

· Ability to write and execute event promotion materials to generate interest

· Highly organized and detail-oriented self-starter

· Exceptional interpersonal, customer service, listening, and decision-making skills

· Flexible schedule; required to work evenings and weekends

· Strong Computer literacy including MS Office, Email and Database skills


Desired Qualifications (helpful but not required):

· Experience in the field of animal welfare or animal shelter

· Bilingual, fluent in Spanish and English, verbal and written skills

· Experience with “hands on” nonprofits

· Experience working with volunteers

· College degree

This is a part-time, non-exempt position. The compensation for the position is within the AAWA (Association of Animal Welfare Advancement) median range and the League pays a salary bonus for language ability in: Arabic, Mandarin, Sign Language, Spanish or Vietnamese.
