As a result of organizational growth and our commitment to the expansion of services in the South Sound, Amara has newly developed the Pierce County Development Manager position to help serve our community. The Pierce County Development Manager will help manage day-to-day operations of the Development Department’s efforts out of the Tacoma office, overseeing event fundraising and managing a major donor portfolio. Reporting to the Chief Philanthropy Officer, this position works with the Individual Giving team on moves management of donors and prospects, and will be assisted by the Pierce County Director and Pierce County Engagement Specialist. The ideal candidate has demonstrated success designing and implementing fundraising strategies, managing multiple priorities and deadlines, building effective relationships, is a good verbal and written communicator, thrives in a collaborative environment, is committed to serving the Pierce County community, and is passionate about Amara’s mission.

The Pierce County Development Manager reports to the Chief Philanthropy Officer as part of the Development team. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • At the direction of the Chief Philanthropy Officer, make day-to-day decisions for South Puget Sound development operations including: content and timing of donor communications and events, participation in fairs and workshops, messaging to donors, board and committees, internal staff communications, etc.
  • In collaboration with the Chief Philanthropy Officer, lead fundraising strategy and support programming for Pierce County Development Events
  • In collaboration with the Chief Philanthropy Officer, manage stewardship plans for fundraising events and participate in qualification, prospecting, and stewardship of event donors
  • Manage a portfolio of donors through qualification, cultivation, asking, and stewardship
  • Support Chief Philanthropy Officer in managing the overall prospect list
  • Attend Campaign Steering Committee meetings and support committee members as needed
  • Attend Board Meetings when needed and requested by the Chief Philanthropy Officer
  • Assist Chief Philanthropy Officer in communications to the Board and Pierce County Advisory Council about development, campaign, and events
  • Track individual contacts and outreach
  • Assist with other projects as needed and requested by the Chief Philanthropy Officer


  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Five or more years in nonprofit fundraising, event management, and donor relations
  • Knowledge of and experience with the Tacoma [donor] community, a plus
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work some evening and weekend hours as needed for events and meetings
  • Ability to travel for meetings and site visits
  • History of demonstrating initiative and the ability to manage competing priorities and meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and to collaborate effectively
  • Goal-oriented, resourceful, flexible, positive, and good humored
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and experience working in donor databases; eTapestry experience a plus
  • Ability to perform a variety of daily duties and projects with consistency and accuracy
  • Strong interpersonal skills, high level of professionalism and ability to work independently
