American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), a membership organization dedicated to the advancement of women's health care in Washington, DC, is currently seeking a Managing Editor, Consumer Books to manage ACOG's development, launch, and ongoing success of a new line of consumer health books


  • Create content strategy and business plan for each new or revised book in consultation with the Publisher and Product Officer and the Director of Patient Education. Support market research efforts to inform and validate strategy.
  • Recruit ACOG members for each book's editorial board. Organize meetings and calls to develop outlines and conduct physician reviews.
  • Vet and hire freelance writers for each project. Work with Legal and Finance to prepare work contracts and payment schedules. Monitor freelance writer progress and provide resources as needed.
  • Create and manage schedules for all book projects.
  • Conduct developmental editing of draft manuscripts before passing to Editorial team for copyediting.
  • Partner with marketing colleagues on product launches and contribute collateral copy as needed.
  • Monitor product activity and sales. Prepare status and sales reports for internal and external stakeholders as needed.
  • Independently pursue market research activities and competitive benchmarking to bring new concepts to senior staff.
  • Participate in meetings of the Patient Education Review panel as needed.
  • Direct and support other department activities as assigned.


  • Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, publishing, or related fields. Master's degree in publishing a plus.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in developmental editing, preferably in a medical society or nonprofit environments.
  • Superior writing, editing, and organizational skills.
  • Understanding of plain language principles and ability to translate medical information for patients.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple project simultaneously.
  • Ability to think strategically through projects and communicate ideas effectively.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with internal teams.
  • Ability to work closely with physician editorial boards and reviewers.
  • Knowledge of medical nomenclature and terminology; familiarity with ob-gyn a plus.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft OneDrive, and publishing platforms.
