Safe Horizon's mission is to provide support, prevent violence and promote justice for victims of crime and abuse, their families and communities. Teachers in Safe Horizon’s court-based Children’s Centers provide structured, educational, day care support to children of adults involved in court proceedings. The ages of the children range from 6 weeks to 12 years of age. Guided by the lesson plans of the Head Teacher, Teachers lead and facilitate supportive, educational activities with the children in their care.
Ø The Teacher position provides structured, educational, day care support to children of adults involved in court proceedings. The ages of the children range from infancy to 12 years of age. Guided by the lesson plans of the Director, Manager, and the Head Teacher, Head Teachers and Teachers lead and facilitate supportive, educational activities with the children in their care.
Essential Job Functions:
Ø Responsible for the appropriate care and safety of children in the Center;
Ø Follow and maintain the Minimum Requirements and Guidelines of the OCA Statewide Children’s Center Program.
Ø Work with children from infancy to 12 years of age in a supportive, developmentally appropriate, literacy-rich environment that serves children in a court setting;
Ø Maintain and protect the confidentiality of all clients and children that utilize Center;
Ø Maintain registry of all children in the care of the Children’s Center;
Ø Make referrals and connections to parents to take advantage of other Safe Horizon programs, other community, state and federal organizations, programs, and entitlements;
Ø Ensure funder intake forms, federal food program meal plans, registration forms, statistics, and other required forms are filled out accurately, thoroughly, and submitted on a timely basis;
Ø Assist the Head Teacher with curriculum and lesson plan development;
Ø Encourage literacy development for all children through the use of appropriate language while engaging in conversation and activities including but not limited to: story-telling, reading out loud, use of computer software, educational toys and games, arts and crafts, dance, and writing;
Ø Provide meals and snacks to children in accordance to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene requirements and regulations and the OCA Statewide Children’s Centers Program Guidelines and Requirements; and
Ø Change diapers as needed.
Secondary Job Functions:
Ø Maintain overall décor and cleanliness of Children’s Center;
Ø Distribute flyers that have been approved by both Safe Horizon and the OCA Children’s Center Program in the Court building and other areas to build awareness of the Children’s Center;
Ø Perform regular evacuation drills of the Center;
Ø Participation in the development of new components and/or activities with the Head Teacher, Manager, and Director;
Ø Attend any trainings that may be required by Safe Horizon and the OCA Statewide Children’s Center‘s Program.
Supervisory Reports: None
Interacts with: Court personnel, foster grandparents, volunteers, student interns, workers from regulatory and supervisory agencies such as OCA Children’s Center Program Office, DOHMH/CACFP, and any other agencies as appropriate.
Knowledge and Skills:
Ø Understanding of basics of child development for all levels from birth to age 12;
Ø Ability to relate to caregivers and children who are under stress;
Ø Ability to work with difficult population which requires a high level of social skills, maturity, and confidence in addition to being nurturing and flexible, yet firm and in charge;
Ø Ability to communicate effectively in English (speaking and writing); and
Ø Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and the Internet
Ø Bi-lingual in Spanish preferred
Ø High school diploma
Ø AA and/or achievement of the CDA credential.
Ø Experience working with children in some capacity
Ø Prior teaching experience on preschool level preferred;
Ø Training for CPR and First Aid, Mandated Reporter training, DOHMH requirements and regulations
Ø Working with Special Education youth and/or children who were witnesses to violence and/or abuse.
Ø Must meet all licensing and screening requirements, including but not limited to:
Ø Registration with the State Central Registry of Child Abuse and Maltreatment
Ø Pass a pre-employment physical granting medical permission to work with small children, which includes proof of immunizations
Ø Pass an annual physical
