DEPARTMENT SUMMARY

The Government Relations team advocates for immigration-related legislative, regulatory, and policy reforms before Congress and the agencies, consistent with AILA’s principles and priorities.

THE OPPORTUNITY

This is an exciting opportunity for a talented individual with expertise in immigration law and policy to work at the epicenter of federal policymaking and legislative reform during a transformative period in the field. The Policy Analyst or Policy Counsel will work to advance AILA’s administrative and congressional advocacy goals by working with AILA staff, coalition partners, AILA members and committees. The Policy Analyst or Policy Counsel represents AILA before Congress and with the Administration. The Policy Analyst or Policy Counsel contributes significantly to AILA’s written work product, drafting and editing policy papers, practice pointers, bill text, legislative analysis, and blogs. The Policy Analyst or Policy Counsel provides information and support to the AILA membership. This position focuses on enforcement and removal issues but also works on issues related to the legal immigration system related to family-based immigration and humanitarian benefits.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Policy and Legal Analysis

  • Reviews, evaluates, and prepares written analysis on proposed policies, regulations, and legislation.
  • Drafts and contributes to the substantive content of AILA’s policy and legislative work product.

Congressional and Administrative Advocacy

  • Works with the department directors, staff, AILA committees to identify emerging issues and trends, shapes AILA’s policy positions and makes recommendations on key priorities. 
  • Actively participates in the development of legal and policy positions and agenda items for agency meetings and participates in those meetings. 
  • Lobbies Congress and the administration.

Information Sharing and Education

  • Writes and edits news and information items, advocacy alerts, and other items for AILA members and the public. 
  • Serves as a resource to AILA members. 
  • Delivers speeches, participates in public events, and conducts interviews with the media to promote AILA’s positions. 
  • Supports the department’s membership engagement and campaign efforts.

Coalition Work

  • Represents AILA in national or regional coalitions and campaign efforts. 
  • Cultivates relations and alliances with organizations that share a common advocacy purpose.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND TRAINING

J.D. or masters degree in public policy, journalism or relevant field preferred.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

Two years immigration policy and/or general immigration law practice experience is required. Congressional or other legislative experience, experience working with administrative agencies, and experience working on advocacy campaigns preferred.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS (e.g., language requirement, license requirement, certifications)

Bar admission preferred. Fluency in Spanish, a plus.
