Harlem School of the Arts seeks a passionate, experienced Chief Education Officer with a proven track record, strong knowledge of arts education and experience working with elementary, middle, high school, and adult students.  The ideal candidate is well-versed in curriculum development and program administration. Experience developing arts programs in a K-12 school environment is preferred. He or she is energetic and flexible, has deep experience in at least one of HSA’s disciplines, and experience in performance and/or production.


Harlem School of the Arts presents programs and trains artists of all ages and abilities. It also presents arts programs and performances to the community at its site in Harlem as well as locations throughout the New York City Metropolitan area. Its goal is to educate, challenge, and inspire new generations of artists and audiences with exceptional experiences that prepare them for future success.

Position Summary:


The ‪Chief Education Officer leads HSA Creative Programs including Dance, Music, Musical Theater, Theater, and Media & Design. The ‪Chief Education Officer will oversee the administrative aspects of Programs including artistic oversight, managing budgets, cultivating partnerships, and contributing to strategic and programmatic planning for the organization.


This individual will be able to work independently and as part of a collaborative team to inspire the creativity that nurtures great art, artists, and audiences. He or she must be an experienced leader who thrives in a creative environment and has a passion for youth, the arts, and community.


The first several months will include a focus on strategy, building relationships, and piloting new programs. As HSA seeks to reshape its offerings to fully reflect the mission and interdisciplinary training opportunities, this newly created position will play a critical role in building programs aligned with the current and future strategic vision.




The Chief Education Officer will:


·     Plan, implement and manage programs that align with institutional goals and priorities and are consistent with strategic plan

·     ‪Recruit and oversee Department faculty

·     Hire and supervise production and technical personnel as needed

·     Act in an advisory capacity to students and families as appropriate

·     ‪Manage programs budget and ensure all program expenses remain within the approved budget

·     Provide management reports to board and leadership team as needed

·     Manage and develop local school, community, and arts partnerships that strengthen community ties and offer opportunities for HSA and its students

·     ‪Cultivate collegial relationships with colleagues

·     ‪Substitute teach as needed

·     ‪‪Oversee Student Assessment processes

·     Develop a framework and process for consistent program and departmental evaluation, in line with best practices.

·     Experience working with K-12 Public Schools (Experience in New York City DOE a plus)

·     Knowledge of professional practices in Education, Theater, Musical Theater, and/or Jazz is preferred

 


Skills/Experience


•   Master level experience and/or classroom experience in a performing arts discipline

•   Ten plus (10+) years of professional experience in Education, Social Justice. and/or Community Engagement work

•   Experience developing age-appropriate curriculum and lesson plans for all ages

•   Experience in professional development workshop creation and planning

•   Demonstrated experience working in a team environment

•   Ability to collaborate across disciplines of music, dance, and other arts genres

•   Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills

•   Performance and production experience preferred

•   Experience with arts assessments to evaluate program outcomes

•   Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel

•   ‪Budgeting and financial management skills

•   ‪Staff supervision and professional development experience

•   Bachelor’s Degree in a related field, Master’s Degree preferred

•   Must have a strong commitment to HSA's mission and values
