Job Overview

WIA is the only organization dedicated to advancing gender justice in the field of animation. We envision a world where anyone of an underrepresented gender identity can share equally in the creation, production, and rewards of animation, and we provide resources and connections to make it happen. Our approach is forward thinking, inclusive, and intersectional.

WIA is seeking a full-time Communications Manager to raise awareness of and engagement with our mission, impact, and programs. This role will collaborate with the Head of Operations as well as the Chairs of Communications and Marketing on strategic engagement with a broad range of audiences, including, but not limited to, WIA members and supporters, high-profile industry executives, educators, and individual and institutional donors. This is an ideal opportunity for someone who is a proven and effective contributor with the potential to grow with the role.

The right candidate is a superb communicator who understands how to weave data, anecdotes, testimonials, and other information into compelling messaging and engaging content in different formats. A strong candidate has experience in nonprofit communications with a multitude of stakeholders through a variety of channels with an emphasis on social media (both organic and paid), email, and website.

Applicants from BIPOC, LGBTQIIA+, and disability communities are encouraged to apply.

 Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a mission-driven communications strategy that highlights WIA data, community stories, updates, and testimonials to showcase our mission and impact, using a variety of mediums (written, audio, video) across multiple channels
  • Manage the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to, newsletters, social media, donor correspondence, and annual reports
  • Develop and manage WIA brand assets including key messaging, look and feel, and data and content libraries
  • Coordinate digital assets, including the website, ensuring content is shared consistently and messaging is accurate and engaging
  • Use a data-driven approach to improve upon communication methods; track, measure, and report on engagement with WIA’s key audiences across channels
  • Develop, recommend, and manage the communications budget
  • Create and maintain the content calendar
  • Collaborate with the Chair of Communications in identifying and researching media outlets, producers, editors, and reporters receptive to WIA’s message, and in pitching stories to the media
  • Coordinate paid and donated media placements
  • Oversee a team of volunteer graphic designers and writers
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Occasional travel is required

Skills and experience

  • Commitment to the WIA mission and vision is a must. A demonstrated commitment to gender justice and a working knowledge of the animation, gaming, and visual effects industry preferred.
  • 5+ years of progressive communications experience required, preferably in a nonprofit organization
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, or substantial related work experience and education equivalent to a bachelor’s degree required
  • A mature, natural leader with the ability to position and lead communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels
  • Proven experience in developing content for various audiences, including individual and institutional donors
  • Strong understanding of digital engagement best practices
  • Working knowledge of basic press and media relations practices
  • Committed to excellence and eager to constantly learn and grow
  • Data-driven and results-oriented
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, from pithy short-form social copy to compelling long-form articles and blog posts
  • Sincere commitment and proven ability to work collaboratively and effectively with a variety of stakeholders, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters
  • Ability to recognize and create good design along with the ability to work with and delegate to creative professionals
  • Self-starter and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives
  • Strong work ethic
  • Team player willing to roll up their sleeves and pitch in to help colleagues when needed
  • Tech savvy and proficient in CRM management and project management software
  • Experience with the following strongly preferred: AirTable, MailChimp, Hubspot, the entire Google Suite, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Acrobat
