The Center for Court Innovation is a non-profit organization that works to create a more effective and humane justice system by performing original research and helping launch reforms by guiding justice innovators, nationally and internationally. The Center creates operating projects that have been documented to reduce the use of jail and prison, assist victims of crime, and strengthen communities.

Brooklyn Justice Initiatives (BJI) seeks to re-engineer the experience of criminal court in Brooklyn, New York by providing judges and attorneys meaningful alternatives to bail, fines, and jail sentences. Operating out of Kings County Criminal Court, Brooklyn Justice Initiatives is a team of social service providers, court-based resource coordinators, and others who seek to improve the quality of justice. By providing meaningful pre-trial supervised release and post-conviction sentencing options, Brooklyn Justice Initiatives seeks to use an arrest as a window of opportunity to change the direction of a participant’s life and avoid the harmful effects of incarceration. 

Brooklyn Justice Initiatives is seeking an Administrative Assistant. Reporting to the Office Manager, the Administrative Assistant will be responsible for the office’s many needs and functions, including greeting and assisting clients, helping to facilitate the referral and eligibility process, and providing administrative and logistical support to all BJI programs.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Greet and check in participants and staff by collecting basic client information, notify clinical staff of participant arrival, and facilitate screenings and intakes at a high-volume;
  • Manage inventory of office supplies and equipment, and ordering or purchasing additional supplies and equipment for multiple office locations, as needed;
  • Arrange for storage pickups, improving organizational systems, as needed, liaising with facilities for repairs and renovations, and additional office maintenance, as needed;
  • Assist the Office Manager in handling fiscal responsibilities, including but not limited to submitting and monitoring outgoing invoices through online system, assisting with reconciliations, and liaising with CCI Fiscal department;
  • Assist the Office Manager with coordination of all office repairs and maintenance;
  • Communicate facility needs, maintenance and repairs with office manager and project site directors;
  • Maintain directory for staff and vendors;
  • Answer phones and contact participants, partner agencies, and attorneys via phone, email, and text, as needed;
  • Distribute Metro cards, participant incentives, phones, maintain updated logs, and complete monthly inventory;
  • Assist the Office Manager in providing foot traffic numbers to BJI Senior Staff each month;
  • Manage relationships with external vendors;
  • Prepare press packets for site visits and update as needed for special events;
  • Assist the Office Manager in planning events and staff group activities, as needed;
  • Coordinate setup for special events, trainings and large meetings at designated operating sites;
  • Retrieve shipments and run administrative errands to different departments within courthouse;
  • Maintain and update Office Administration Manual;
  • Perform other administrative tasks, as necessary.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent of 1 year of relevant experience. Excellent written and oral communication skills required. Candidate must have a commitment to social justice issues and desire to learn more about the justice field. Must have proficient computer skills. Bilingual (English-Spanish) strongly preferred. Candidate must be open to learning, be team oriented, and able/willing to speak in front of groups.

Position Type: Full-time, weekend and evening hours required as needed for BJI operations.

Location: Brooklyn, NY

Compensation: Salary starts at $40,000 and is commensurate with experience.
