The Communications Manager will join a growing, fun, and creative communications team that works relentlessly to tell the story of how American development and diplomacy builds a better, safer world. The manager will be a forward-thinking communications professional with the skills to advance our organization’s agenda, increase the USGLC’s message and visibility, and expand our constituency through active engagement with our community, our membership and the media.

The Communications Manager is responsible for driving all media relations and media placements (earned and opinion) in state and local markets across the country and supporting a proactive national media engagement strategy. This position also heavily supports the drafting and editing of USGLC written communications. The Manager will develop a deep network of state and local press contacts and maintain frequent engagement in these markets and work across the organization to identify stories and earned media opportunities with the goal of securing regional and local placements of earned or opinion pieces on a weekly basis. The Manager will also support engagement with the national press corps through press release distribution and reporter engagement. This position will also be responsible for managing the content strategy for the USGLC blog.

 

Primary responsibilities will include:

  • Written communication – Draft media advisories, press releases, quotes, opeds, letters to the editor, fact sheets, and other external communications to drive local media placement of USGLC advocacy and policy priorities and convening events. In addition to events, the Manager will look for new opportunities and hooks to develop and place written communications in key markets and among local stakeholders.
  • Event Support – Coordinate media and PR strategies for all outside-the-beltway and congressional events to secure coverage in local media markets.
  • Media relations – Develop and maintain close relationships and regular communication with key print, digital, TV, and radio contacts in select state and local media markets.
  • Media placement – Responsible for identifying hooks and driving a cadence of weekly state and local media coverage, ranging from opeds and LTEs, USGLC CEO and stakeholder interviews, event coverage, media roundtables and any other creative ideas to connect USGLC priorities in local markets.
  • Blog – Responsible for working across USGLC to develop and execute a long term editorial calendar for the blog that results in at least one blog post per week. Goal for each blog post is to secure 500 clicks, so the state & local communications manager will also be responsible for working with communications colleagues and others across the organization to create an amplification strategy around each blog to achieve this goal.


Requirements:

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in media or communications with a broad portfolio of work.
  • Experience in writing, editing, and managing the distribution of content for a variety of audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability in creating quality materials in multiple formats under time pressure, and handle multiple projects and deadlines concurrently.
  • Highly versatile and able to pivot from writing news releases to nuanced op-eds on complicated public policy topics.
  • Experience with media monitoring and list building tools; knowledge of Meltwater, TV Eyes, Cision, or Critical Mention a plus.
  • Strong collaboration skills; experience working with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • A flexible team player who shares responsibility and credit.
  • Campaign or political experience is desirable.
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, international relations, political science or related field.


Compensation:
