Position summary:

Over a 4 or 8- week course of study, Usdan Nature and Gardening Teachers will create and implement curricula, and teach and assess students at Usdan Summer Camp for the Arts on Usdan’s campus in Wheatley Heights, Long Island, NY. Gardening teacher will have paid prep time in the garden this Spring.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

-     Review intended course materials with Department Chair and/or Administrative staff prior to the start of camp.

-     Prepare and organize the setup of the garden or nature studio. This may include pre-season planting for the garden.

-     Teach assigned hours daily (approximately 3 hours).

-     Supervise students during arrival and lunch (approximately 1.5 hours).

-     Supervise transition to recreation classes, which may include escorting students to their recreation location.

-     Maintain the garden and/or studio spaces.

-     Participate in department and staff meetings and trainings as required.

-     Attend the entire camp session per your contracted dates (see dates below).

Roles and responsibilities:

-     Work with the Nature team, Director of Education and/or with the Administrative staff to set goals for the class and plan the student experience.

-     Submit course plans and supply orders prior to the start of camp.

-     Prepare and organize the setup of the studio.

-     Teach four hours per day and prepare for each class.

-     Supervise students at daily assemblies and in passing periods.

-     Attend department and staff meetings and trainings as required.

-     Have student safety as a top priority at all times. 

-     Create a joyful, fun and engaging atmosphere in the studio.

-     Use inquiry, exploration and experimentation as primary teaching tools.

-     Differentiate instruction to be both challenging and developmentally appropriate for each student’s age and ability, which varies within and across classes.

-     Teach skills that are both technical and cognitive. Encourage students to explore ideas and their art form and to actively reflect on the process.

-     Have a curriculum that is rooted in diversity by incorporating and encouraging multiple perspectives from historic and dance content.

-     Create an environment where teachers are learners, there is respect and trust among all participants, and a belief in student capacities.

-     Model the behaviors of artists, how they think, work, and live.

QUALIFICATIONS:

ON PAPER:

-     Bachelor's degree in education, or equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities in education, gardening, natural sciences or sustainability.

-     Prior successful teaching experience.

2021 SUMMER SEASON DATES AND TIMES:

-     Monday - Friday, June 28 - August 20, 9:15 AM – 3:15 PM, closed July 5.

-     Staff Orientation: Saturday June 5, time TBD, at camp

-     10-15 hours of paid pre-season online workshops and planning

-     Family Orientation: TBD

-     Gardening instructor will help with pre-season planting.

Salary

Salary commensurate with experience; 8 weeks $6800-$8000.
