Be in on the ground floor of an effort to change the trajectory of thousands of academically struggling Latino schoolchildren. We are looking to fill an AmeriCorps VISTA position to help create and refine our innovative effort to teach Latino parents to advocate for equity in their children’s education. This position is an excellent opportunity for a VISTA Volunteer with a passion for social justice and a drive to make a difference in the lives of immigrant families.
For nearly 20 years, Identity has been serving thousands of vulnerable youth and their families living in high poverty areas of the Washington, DC region. After-school, in the community and on the playing fields, Identity programming helps youth improve social and emotional learning, achieve academic success, and prepare for work.
While Latinos make up more than a third of Montgomery County’s student body, they have the lowest graduation rates. Through community organizing and engagement for change at the school and systems level, Identity seeks to close the widening achievement gap and reverse this trend. Our new Leadership Academy program, Padres Latinos Conectados, is a leadership development and civic engagement program that trains and empowers Latino parents to be more involved in their children’s schooling and promote improvements in the education system and its investment in their children.
Our ideal VISTA thrives in a team environment, is self-motivated, and has good culturally competent interpersonal communication skills with young and old. We are looking for a VISTA with an aptitude for visual design, and an interest in training programs and community organizing. Familiarity with Microsoft Office, publishing software and Photoshop is a plus. The Latino Parents Connected VISTA Volunteer must be bilingual Spanish/English
Benefits include a stipend of approximately $20,000, enrollment in AmeriCorps VISTA Health Benefit Program, generous leave, relocation allowance, monthly training and professional development, plus post-service benefits such as an education award and non-competitive eligibility for federal employment for one year.
