Job Opening: Director of School Operations

Reports To: VP of Operations

Status: Full Time, exempt, 12 month role            


SUMMARY: The Director of School Operations for Bright Star Schools is responsible for overseeing operations and school safety at our West Adams Cluster of schools along with providing support for our office and custodial teams.

Bright Star Schools is a free, publicly funded, and open enrollment non-profit organization with nine public charters in urban Los Angeles. Across all Bright Star sites, over 90% of our students are eligible for free and reduced lunch.

School Operations Performance Responsibilities:

·       Collaborate with VP of Operations in developing and executing annual department goals

·       Collaborate with VP of Operations to Identify, develop, and deliver professional development trainings for school site operations and maintenance staff

·       Meet with school administration monthly to discuss operational and safety concerns

·       Conduct weekly check-in meetings with the Dean of Operations

·       Review after school programs regularly to ensure grant compliance

·       Selection and oversight of various (i.e. afterschool, transportation, security, etc) vendor relationships

·       Attend school safety trainings provided by LACOE, CDE, and other non-profit and private organizations throughout the year to ensure up-to-date practices and protocols are being implemented at each school site

·       Coordinate with School Site Councils, first responders, and site administrators to revise School Safety and Emergency Response Plans annually  

·       Coordinate special projects as needed. 

·       Work with Deans of Operations to:

·       Review monthly facility walkthroughs and address trends

·       Collaborate with food vendor to provide breakfast, lunch, and snack at all campuses and ensure compliance with National School Lunch Program

·       Review Help Desk tickets and ensure reasonable response times

·       Organize immunization clinics and vision/hearing screenings as necessary

·       Ensure all students are in compliance with all immunizations required for school entry 

·       Review student injury reports and connect with insurance as needed.

·       Process insurance certificate requests

·       Identify, codify, and share best practices in school operations, including documenting standard operating procedures for schools

·       Ensure each campus has emergency supplies, replenish as needed 

·       Organize annual fire alarm testing/replenishment of fire extinguishers 

·       Ensure drill systems/practices are uniform (i.e. attendance taking, binders, etc) 

·       Create and maintain emergency signage in classrooms and on/off campus

·       Evaluate campus needs (security, cameras, lighting, alarms, locks, entrances/exits)

·       Develop relationships with local law enforcement and emergency response teams on behalf of individual schools

·       Provide parent/take home literature informing parents of school protocols and parents’ roles/procedures in emergency situations

·       Observe monthly drills at all schools and provide feedback to Administration and Staff.

·       Ensure each school schedules and completes all required drills

·       Develop and deliver staff emergency trainings. This includes trainings for instructional staff, administration, office and support staff, and enrichment programming staff.   

·       Create protocol document for substitute teachers, visitors, vendors 


Office Manager Lead Responsibilities:

·       Develop and execute annual department goals

·       Identifying, developing, and delivering professional development for school site Office Teams.

·       Conduct bi-weekly meetings with entire Office teams. 

·       Meet and work with OM’s in development of goals, objectives, and systems. 

·       Prepare documents and collaborate with office and operations staff to ensure completion of annual registration day; manage/create registration packets with vendor and Data team.

·       Manage Registration Process systems with OM’s

·       Collaborate with Data, Family Services and Engagement around projects as needed.


Qualification/Requirements: 

o  Outstanding attention to detail and willingness to get the job done.

o  Able to communicate and interact effectively with multiple stakeholders.

o  Excellent organizational, planning, and implementation skills.

o  Able to multitask and work in a fast paced entrepreneurial environment.

o  Able to meet deadlines with minimum supervision

o  Should be customer service driven

o  Knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)

o  Professional appearance – Business casual

o  Note: This position will require reliable transportation in order to travel between school sites.  


Education/Training/Experience: 

o  High school diploma. Bachelor’s degree preferred

o  5+ years of progressive work experience directly in a K-12 setting, with at least 2 years of experience at a school site in a lead operations role. Charter school experience, preferred. 

o  2+ years experience managing people 


Salary and Benefits:

Salary Range:  $90,000-110,000           

Status:             Full Time
