Reporting to the Director of Major Gifts, the Major Gifts Officer is a member of the school's front line fundraising team and is responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major donors and prospects. This position supports the Director and the Vice President of Development & Public Affairs in managing select leadership and volunteer groups and other special initiatives and participates in donor prospect strategy. 


  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 100-150 individual donors and prospects and effectively build and maintain relationships with them.
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospects and donors, including alumni of the College and Pre-College Divisions, parents, and friends of the School and help develop strategies for securing major gifts to further the mission of The Juilliard School. 
  • Secure unrestricted annual gifts as prospects are cultivated towards a major gift.
  • Support the Vice President of Development & Public Affairs and the Director of Major Gifts in tracking renewals and prospects for the Board of Trustees and Juilliard Council
  • Work with the Artistic Directors and Deans of the school, as well as Chairs and faculty, to identify priorities and cultivate prospects. 
  • Participate in prospect management meetings, to review prospects in the major gift portfolios and to receive new prospect assignments.
  • Draft pledge agreements, solicitations, and personalized gift acknowledgement letters.
  • Support volunteer solicitors in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting prospects.
  • Help plan and execute cultivation and outreach strategies and special events for major donor prospects.
  • Input actions and contact reports regarding donors and prospects, and develop and track major gift proposals in the fundraising database, Raiser’s Edge, in a timely manner.
  • Must be a detail-oriented, self-starter with a demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple projects and priorities to meet timelines and deadlines.


  • B.A. degree
  • At least 5 years' experience in the Development Office of a performing arts or educational institution 
  • Highly motivated, collaborative, creative, and deadline oriented
  • Excellent written, verbal, analytical, and interpersonal skills 
  • Experience with major donor giving techniques, such as moves management
  • Knowledge of database software (Raiser’s Edge) and Microsoft Office (Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel and Word) preferred
  • Superior interpersonal skills with proven ability to successfully interact and collaborate with students, colleagues, school officials, and high-level donors in a professional manner and demonstrating tact, poise, and diplomacy while working with a wide variety of personalities
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage several projects at once
  • Familiarity with planned giving principles highly desirable
  • Interest in and knowledge of the performing arts preferred
  • Some weekend and evening work plus flexibility to travel occasionally is required
