Salary

This is a consulting position; will negotiate project fee based on experience. Approximately $20-25/hour

We are looking for the right person to coordinate one of the Springfield region's "Envision Success Project (ESP) groups, a project of the Polus Center for Social & Economic Development, Inc. This program supports 6-10 youth, age 14-22, who are legally blind and live in the Springfield area. The coordinator will meet (along with Polus Center staff and MCB) with students to identify their career interests, and then create opportunities to visit with local businesses and other workplaces as a group or individually, identify potential internship options for each student, and provide workplace readiness training and coaching,

ESP was launched in 2017 in the Central MA and MetroWest regions, and began services in Springfield in 2018. ESP is one of MCB's "Pre-Employment Transition Services" (Pre-ETS). Pre-ETS services address the five areas below:

  • Job exploration counseling;
  • Work-based learning experiences, which may include in-school or after school opportunities, or experience outside the traditional school setting;
  • Counseling on opportunities for enrollment in postsecondary educational programs;
  • Workplace readiness training to develop social skills and independent living;
  • Instruction in self-advocacy, which may include peer mentoring.

This is a part-time, flexible position where the consultant uses the framework and philosophies of the program and the Polus Center (please review our guiding principles and more about Polus at www.poluscenter.org), but then has the freedom to shape their own regional program based on the needs and interests of their students, in close partnership with the MCB staff in Springfield.

The ideal candidate has training and consulting expertise, has experience with work readiness programs and career planning, has worked with people who have vision impairments, has ties to the community to help identify interesting and informative business tours, and is creative and able to both work independently and be part of a small team of other consultants and trainers. Knowledge of "social role valorization" a big plus, and/or a commitment to inclusive opportunities for people with disabilities. Experience working with people who are blind or low vision preferred, expertise working with students with other types of disabilities such as autism a plus.

The program runs through the summer and throughout the year after school. While hours are flexible, it is necessary to work around the students' schedules and may require occasional weekend trips. During the school year tours happen after school and often run into the evening, Requires driving students to tours and to post-tour dinner events, approximately once per week during the school year, potentially more often during the summer. Approximately 25 hours per week.
