Appellate Advocates is a nonprofit public defender organization, based in New York City, providing high-quality representation to individuals convicted of crimes in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island who cannot afford private lawyers. Our attorneys are experienced in criminal law and believe in a holistic approach to vindicating every client’s constitutional rights, working to overturn unjust convictions and sentences, and assisting with reentry to the community. While our main work is criminal appeals, we also represent clients in a number of related post-conviction matters, including Sex Offender Registration Act (“SORA”) hearings and appeals.

Our SORA Practice

SORA requires individuals convicted of specified offenses to comply with strict registration and notification requirements, oftentimes for life. Sex offender registration, in addition to severely limiting one’s housing and employment options, carries a profound stigma that makes it difficult to truly re-enter society. Indeed, our SORA-subject clients are required to meet with the police frequently and face felony charges for failing to update their information, even decades after the underlying offense. For individuals adjudicated a Level 3 or Level 2, their name, photograph, home address, employment address, and offense details are posted on the internet for a minimum of 30 years.

Appellate Advocates’ dedicated SORA team provides expert representation to each client in advance of the hearing, in court, and after their release. We have won more than 100 SORA hearings and appeals, and have successfully petitioned for downward modifications for clients who have demonstrated rehabilitation after their initial hearing.

Position Description: We are seeking to hire immediately an experienced criminal defense attorney to work primarily on representing our SORA-subject clients at hearings and on appeal.

Qualifications:

·      A minimum of two years of indigent criminal defense experience, with experience in New York trial-level proceedings or appeals preferred

·      Courtroom experience and strong oral advocacy skills

·      Strong research and writing skills

·      A dedication to client-focused representation

·      A self-directed ability to manage an active caseload

·      New York State bar admission required
