Young Storytellers equips young people to be the driving force of their own narratives. We’re passionate about bringing people together and creating stories to raise the voices of those who don’t often get heard. We believe that when a young person understands the power of their own story — made of their unique background, culture, race, gender, sexuality, immigration status, geographic location, and economic statues — it creates a more empathetic and equitable future for everyone. We raise voices, one story at a time.
Young Storytellers works with students in elementary, middle, and high school. In elementary school, students write scripts that are completely their own; in middle school, students write stories about challenges that they face; and in high school, students explore how various communities are portrayed in the media and craft stories that they feel represent their self-identified communities. Students in each program work with volunteer mentors, and every student gets to see their work performed by professional actors. Young Storytellers programs are designed around Common Core standards, integrate Social and Emotional Learning activities, and include components of Learning for Justice’s Social Justice Standards.
The Data & Evaluation Consultant is a seasonal contracted position that provides integral support to the Young Storytellers Programs, Education, and Volunteers teams by ensuring data is collected with integrity from our many school sites across programs, cities, and states. The Data & Evaluation Consultant collaborates with YS team members to build surveys to collect both qualitative and quantitative data that is representative of student, family, teacher, school staff, partner, and volunteer experiences, and presents findings to be interpreted and used by the YS team. The Data & Evaluation Consultant drives impact by providing a comprehensive report at the end of the school year that all members of the YS team can use, including fundraising and development team members. The Data & Evaluation Consultant also works with Program, Volunteer, and Education team members to enhance data literacy and analysis skills, in addition to collaborating on the creation, refinement, and development of data best practices and new forms of data collection, including but not limited to structured focus groups and community interviews. As with all YS team members and consultants, the values of connection, belonging, exploration, play, and equity are at the core of all decisions and actions that the Data & Evaluation Consultant makes.
