Position:              Director, Healthcare Systems Initiative

Supervisor:        VP, Project 2025

 

Position Summary:

The Director for Project 2025’s Healthcare Systems Initiative will influence healthcare systems nationwide to initiate and sustain the comprehensive implementation of suicide prevention best practices in primary care, mental health care, and emergency departments, and for care coordination and care transitions. These practices include enhanced screening and risk assessment, safety planning, lethal means safety counseling, evidence-based mental health care, caring/follow up communications, and warm handoffs in care transitions (e.g., between inpatient and outpatient mental health care, between primary and outpatient mental health care, ED and outpatient care, between emergent and outpatient mental health care, and care across multiple healthcare systems).

 

Responsibilities:

·        Identify, build, and sustain partnerships that serve strategic goals for the Healthcare Systems Initiative and develop and implement tactics to meet the outcomes of the initiative

·        Establish and lead working coalition among national suicide prevention stakeholders in healthcare, including academic/medical associations, accrediting bodies and advocacy groups, to actively champion specific P2025 outcomes

·        Implement enhanced upstream and downstream requirements by national accrediting and oversight bodies for suicide prevention care (Joint Commission, CARF, etc.). e.g., expanded screening/identification requirements, Safety Planning Intervention in ED, or expanded availability of evidenced based mental health care for those at elevated risk

·        Establish reimbursable suicide prevention best practices in primary care, mental health, and/or emergency departments

·        Oversee completion of training in one or more suicide prevention best practices for 100K health care providers nationally

·        Together with AFSP national teams and the Chapter Engagement manager, create project implementation plans, track project milestones and resolve threats to project success

·        Collaborate with AFSP’s Impact Measurement team to establish evaluation plans and data management systems for each project

·        Establish ongoing awareness of research findings for suicide prevention best practices in healthcare systems and continuous exploration of translating those findings into practice

·        Serve as an organization spokesperson related to Project 2025’s Healthcare Systems Initiative goals and priorities

·        Other responsibilities as assigned by senior leadership in support of Project 2025 strategic objectives

 

Qualifications:

·        Master’s degree in Public Health, Business, or relevant social or behavioral science

·        5+ years of experience in health care systems and/or policy is preferred

·        Ability to identify national healthcare stakeholders, including researchers, executives, policy advocates, etc.

·        Skills to proactively seek out and build functioning coalitions with diverse set of stakeholders, and effectively advocate with partners around specific asks

·        Ability to think creatively with partners in identifying tactics to achieve strategic goals

·        Ability to speak knowledgably and persuasively with national level stakeholders/executives in healthcare and emergency department communities

·        Expert level project management skills: for complex national projects, ability to set interim milestones, map out timelines, track progress, early identification and active resolution of barriers

·        Knowledge of national level multi-site health care program evaluation

·        Proven track record of accountability and meeting or surpassing outcomes

·        Knowledge of basic science of suicide prevention and mental health (community and clinical approaches)

·        Excellent interpersonal skills with a diverse set of colleagues

·        Excellent skills in written and verbal communications
