The Legal Action Center seeks a dynamic individual to serve as the inaugural Liman Communications Associate in its New York office.
About the Organization: The Legal Action Center (LAC) is a national non-profit law and advocacy organization founded in 1973, with offices in New York City and Washington, D.C. LAC is the only organization in the country whose sole mission is to fight discrimination against people with criminal records, substance use disorders, and/or HIV/AIDS. LAC is a national leader in preserving the gains realized through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) of expanded access to health care for people with mental health and substance use disorders and people in the criminal justice system. LAC is also a leading advocate for the privacy of substance use disorder and HIV information.
About the Position: The Liman Communications Associate would work with and report to the Director of Communications and Strategy to expand our outreach via traditional and social media channels, to support the redevelopment and modernizing of our website, to explore new ways to tell LAC’s story using multi-media tactics, and to work with the state and national policy teams to coordinate and support campaigns.
The position will collaborate with the Director of Communications and Strategy to implement a comprehensive communications plan for the Legal Action Center, building on its recent success in expanding the Center’s visibility and influence in the media, and growing our reach to new audiences. S/he will be responsible for developing tactics and messaging to reach LAC’s various stakeholders, including but not limited to: legal services clients, policy-makers and key advocacy allies, institutional and individual donors;
The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker with excellent written and verbal communication skills who can multi-task and adhere to internal and external deadlines. The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- Excellent writing and communication skills;
- Strong knowledge of and interest in media relations;
- Interest in web-based communications; experience with Wordpress strongly preferred;
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and project management skills;
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and follow-up with short and long-term objectives;
- Strong commitment to racial and social justice;
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a collaborative team.
