ABOUT FRESH YOUTH INITIATIVES (FYI):  FYI is a dynamic community-based organization that offers immigrant and first generation youth the tools, supports, and caring relationships that enable them to navigate transitions, connect to their community, flourish in school, and prepare for college and career.  Founded in 1993, FYI operates programs across five sites in Washington Heights/Inwood where 1,200 children participate in after school programs, summer camps, service learning, advisory, and mental health services.  As a result of community needs that arose during the pandemic, FYI transformed itself from a single service youth organization to a multi-service organization that bolsters fragile families through food relief, social services and mental health counseling.


ABOUT THE PROGRAM AND POSITION

The Welcome Program specifically serves children and early adolescents who are immigrants, with the primary goal of helping participants to adapt to their new lives, thrive in school, make new friends, and increase their comfort level speaking English.  This exciting bilingual, bicultural out-of-school time program provides a safe community, fosters a sense of belonging; employs trauma-informed services; offers academic supports to increases participants’ language and literacy skills; and bridges children’s two worlds – past and present -  to strengthen balance and self-identity. Welcome was originally founded to help new immigrants at the elementary level who were struggling to succeed in school while learning a new language, who felt homesick and alone, and, in many cases, were traumatized by the move and related circumstances.


Program Director responsibilities include these:

·       Sustain the Welcome Program as a safe haven and enriched community for immigrant youth; provide activities that integrate youth development, SEL, and academic instruction

·       Design and implement innovative and effective instruction that supports ELL and MLL students

·       Administer literacy assessments for Spanish-speaking students; use data, assessments, and observation to evaluate the needs and progress of students and to develop corresponding educational plans and services

·       Sustain current literacy practices including, Read-Alouds and Words their Way curriculum

·       Supervise the provision of literacy services by Welcome staff; conduct workshops and professional development sessions

·       Oversee and coordinate whole child activities including, the performing and fine arts, sports and recreation that foster social-emotional learning, multiple intelligences, and personal growth

·       Administer evaluations to collect and analyze data on educational and social-emotional outcomes

·       Develop Welcome Family activities such as Family Literacy Programs, and culminating events

·       Meet with parents to develop strategies for children’s academic success

·       Meet regularly with school personnel to review student progress, to adjust learning strategies, exchange observations, and coordinate school-day and afterschool content

·       Hire, supervise, and evaluate full- and part-time staff


QUALIFICATIONS 

§  Master’s degree in Education preferred

§  Three years of experience working with children 

§  Experience working with teachers and parents 

§  Strong team work 

§  Inspirational leadership skills

§  Demonstrated teaching competence

§  Spanish/English fluency and demonstrated cultural competence


Compensation 

Excellent salary and benefits include 21 vacation days (24 days after 3 years), 8 holidays, medical coverage, professional development opportunities, and a highly pleasant work environment. This supportive setting encourages staff to strengthen or broaden their own leadership and practice skills, to design and implement innovative programs, and to contribute to the field at large.  Staff across and within sites work closely, exchange ideas, coordinate services, and provide strong mutual aid and support.
