Program Responsibilities: K-8 Education Programs

Reports to: Education Program Coordinator

Position Summary: Masa is a community-based organization that partners with Latin American immigrant children, youth, and families to develop strong learners and leaders who fully engage in and contribute to the broader community. Masa’s community-led, integrated model engages the entire family, grounded in a deep commitment to strengthening literacy, leadership, and power for Mexican, Central American, and Indigenous People. Masa fosters a culturally responsive learning community in which families engage with direct service and advocacy programs to dismantle barriers to success.

The Program Associate plays an essential role in supporting recruitment, enrollment, and implementation of our education programs, which serves nearly 200 children in Kindergarten through 8th grade annually. The vast majority of participants are children of immigrants or immigrants themselves. At our education programs, Masa ensures children’s cultures and histories are celebrated, and supports students in growing academically so they are prepared to be critically conscious leaders.

This is an ideal position for someone who is fully bilingual in English and Spanish, passionate about supporting children and youth academically, as well as in building a positive cultural identity and a commitment to social justice, interested in education and non-profit management, and deeply committed to Masa’s mission of developing strong learners and leaders within the South Bronx’s Mexican, Central American and Indigenous speaking community. Due to COVID-19, our programming for K-8^th grade is being held virtually but, we may return to in-person programming once it is safe to do so. Family support for these programs is still being held-in-person as needed. 

Responsibilities

• Support program recruitment, including creating flyers, designing and implementing outreach plans, and making phone calls.
• Facilitate intake and enrollment process for prospective and admitted families, including booking appointments, tracking enrollment progress, completing paperwork, notifying families of their acceptance, and following up on missing documents.
• Manage collection of students’ academic records including report cards, individual education plans (IEPs), progress reports, as well as, tracking and organizing data and following up with parents regarding missing records. 
• Manage data-entry related to programming including documenting attendance, student performance, goal-setting activities, and homework checklists, among others.
• Support implementation of culturally responsive curriculum and lesson plans for Masa’s literacy, social justice, and cultural programs, including preparing materials and supporting volunteers.
• Support day-to-day operations of programs, including, but not limited to, ensuring all homework and program material that scholars and volunteers will need are secured for program session, setting up facilities (or remote zoom meetings), monitoring attendance and reaching out to program participants and parents if needed, supporting volunteers in working with students, and communicating and reinforcing program rules and routines.
• Assist with maintaining and monitoring program inventory.
• Provide family support and individual case management as needed, including assisting families with technology and remote learning, writing letters, filling out other documentation and providing referrals.
• Assist with volunteer recruitment and enrollment, including conducting volunteer interviews and following up on reference checks, and volunteer training.
• Support the planning and execution of special events on an as-needed basis.
• Implement and follow Masa’s policies and procedures with respect to client confidentiality and safety.

Requirements and Qualifications 

• Fluent in English AND Spanish
• Must be available Monday – Thursday 3-8:15 PM; other hours can be agreed upon with supervisor. Ability to perform both in-person and remote work is required.
• Understanding of developmentally appropriate practice in K-8 education.
• Tech-savvy; proficient in use of data collection system; able to quickly learn software/data systems; SalesForce experience a plus.
• Excellent administrative, organizational, and time management skills are required.
• Excellent verbal, listening, and written communication skills in English AND in Spanish 
• Able to perform work efficiently and accurately with minimal supervision
• Demonstrated commitment to and experience in working with immigrant communities a major plus

 Other Requirements

• Ability to be flexible in assignment and work hours, including weekend hours and participating in community events as needed
• Light to moderate carrying of program materials is required (15 – 20 lbs) 
• Ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations
• CPR and First Aid Certification or willingness to obtain 
• Willingness to be fingerprinted and complete a background check
