Brooklyn Legal Services seeks an intake paralegal for our LGBTQ & HIV Advocacy Unit. The paralegal will conduct intake on-site, at outreach locations, and at homes and hospitals, as necessary, engage in outreach, and provide case advocacy for people living with HIV/AIDS and members of the LGBTQ community.
Brooklyn Legal Services, part of Legal Services NYC, provides high-quality, innovative representation to address the pressing legal needs of Brooklyn’s diverse low-income population. BLS focuses on the problems that have the greatest impact on our clients — preserving affordable and decent housing, maintaining income support, redressing abusive lending and consumer practices, promoting family stability and mitigating the effects of domestic violence, and advocating for the disabled.
The LGBTQ/ HIV Advocacy Unit is a general practice unit designed to provide comprehensive legal services in a single location for people living with HIV/AIDS and the LGBTQ community. The Project provides representation in a broad-range of civil legal needs including housing preservation, accessing public assistance, social security and other benefits, family and consumer law. The Project also files affirmative litigation challenging discrimination and other systemic abuses faced by the LGBT and HIV communities.
Experience and Qualifications
The intake paralegal responsibilities will include conducting intake, gathering client information and coordinating follow-up services, providing legal guidance with the assistance of attorneys, and assisting case-handlers on client related matters. Occasional evening and weekend intake may be required.
· Excellent interviewing, communication, and writing skills;
· Experience and demonstrated interest in working with low-income people;
· Ability to effectively advocate for others, particularly in relation to public benefits and healthcare access;
· Strong interest and aptitude for working with diverse communities, particularly transgender, gender variant, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer individuals, people living with HIV/AIDS, substance users, and people with mental illness;
· Prior work experience and/or post-high school education preferred;
· Excellent organizational skills;
· Fluency or proficiency in English and another language, particularly Spanish, preferred.
