Program Background:

This is a 12-month, full-time position that plays a pivotal role in supporting the work of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and a select group of its Healthy Children, Healthy Weight (HCHW) policy grantees to develop a of cohesive agenda and strategy in order to integrate the research, communications, and advocacy efforts associated with the Foundations’ HCHW strategy. 

RWJF seeks to achieve a Culture of Health in which all children and their families have an equitable opportunity to attain optimal physical, social and emotional development and well-being. They understand all children getting off to the right start is essential to long-term well being. To accomplish this, RWJF is partnering with Tides to support HCHW policy grantees in revising and operationalizing a cohesive policy strategy to optimize the foundation’s efforts to improve child and family outcomes.

Tides’ role will be to coordinate and facilitate ongoing alignment, collaboration, and integration of grantee policy-focused work, including work related to addressing private industry, as well as both regulatory and legislative approaches at the local, state and federal levels. Tides will create space for HCHW grantees to connect, learn and collectively implement the tools and resources available to significantly improve health outcomes for children and families.  

This position can be based in Tides’ San Francisco or New York office with flexibility to discuss a remote location. Expected start date is end of October to early November.

  • You are comfortable with the emergent nature of designing a new program alongside stakeholders. You are a flexible and proactive problem-solver, pivoting as new needs or information come to light.

The right candidate will be willing and able to:

Build a Grantee Community

  • Participate in planning and facilitating co-design sessions (virtual and/or in-person) with grantees and stakeholders to determine on community values and goals, capacity needs, and shared learning activities.  
  • Develop and implement a weaving plan that encourages grantee interaction and connections through discussion forums, webinars, e-newsletters, phone calls, etc. Develop guides and incentives to encourage engagement.
  • Work with the Tides core team and internal IT personnel to identify and launch communications tool(s) and build a resource library to support grantee interaction and coordinated action planning. If needed, manage external consultants to support tool selection and implementation.
  • Form and manage advisory group(s) of grantee representatives and other stakeholders, if needed, to more efficiently inform strategy and activities.

Manage Community Capacity and Knowledge Development

  • Develop an understanding of existing work and resources related to the HCHW strategy to identify gaps and opportunities for shared learning and capacity building HCHW grantees. Conduct research and interview grantees and other stakeholders as necessary. 
  • Select and manage subject matter experts and other consultants who will provide trainings or other opportunities for the community.

Support Coordinated Policy Strategy and Action Planning

  • With the Tides Special Initiatives team, plan and facilitate of a co-design process to determine a strategy and measures of success. Reassess and update strategy, as needed. 
  • Manage the formation and activities of grantee working groups to develop coordinated action plans based on the co-designed strategy and measures of success.  

Manage Grant Deliverables and Funder Relationships

The Tides Special Initiatives team will the primary points of contact for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation staff, with the Program Manager playing a key role in developing and maintaining a strong relationship with the foundation.

  • Participate in calls or meetings with RWJF.
  • Identify and elevate strategic opportunities or challenges to the Special Initiatives team and with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
  • Regularly share progress on goals and outcomes, including writing reports and other updates to share with RWJF staff.
  • Make recommendations for ongoing support and action following the grant period.

Manage People and Program Administration

  • Manage a part-time Program Coordinator, who will be responsible for program logistics and administrative duties, including maintaining communication tools and platforms, event support, entering invoices and receipts for payment, and submitting consultant contracts for review and approval.
  • With the Special Initiatives and Finance teams, manage the grant budget and track expenses.
  • Lead event planning and logistics, with administrative support from the Program Coordinator.

Your Qualities:  

  • Strong understanding of basic nonprofit operations, including finance, compliance, and administration, particularly in the health or policy space.
  • Personal alignment with Tides’ Vision, Mission and Approach.
  • Ability to work effectively with people from different cultures, backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Strong project management skills, high attention to details and solid experience in working across organizations undertaking significant, complex policy efforts.
  • Excellent listening, writing, facilitation, and presentation skills.
  • Able to work comfortably both independently and in coordination with cross-functional teams.

Your Education & Experience:

  • B.A./B.S. or higher degree, or equivalent experience.
  • 5 - 7+ years of experience of relevant work experience in nonprofit program management, client focused consulting in the field of public health, health policy, health equity or other related field. 
  • Demonstrated experience in process and project management and ability to juggle multiple projects and prioritize effectively.
  • Proficiency with Salesforce preferred, and demonstrated ability to learn and optimize project management and communication tools, such as Mailcimp, Slack, Basecamp, Trello or others.
  • Knowledge of or experience in policy advocacy and lobbying at local, state and/or federal levels helpful, but not required.

The Special Initiatives team is a small but mighty cross-functional team within Tides’ Client Services department. This team is responsible for managing collaborative initiatives at Tides to support foundations, businesses, governments, nonprofits and individuals to drive innovative social change. They work closely with colleagues across various departments at Tides including Client Services, Grants, Strategic Partnerships, Finance, Legal and others to help bring bold visions to life.
