We are looking for an experienced nonprofit director with animal rescue and/or veterinary experience, fundraising, human resource management, and experience working and living abroad in low resource countries for 2 years or more.
Roles and Responsibilities, varying depending on previous experience and education:
Benefits for a two year contract:
Onsite accommodation offered in clinic, shelter or offsite in our shared accommodations with private bedroom and shared bathroom and kitchen
18 million VND per month stipend to increase as duties change with the clinic after it opens full time
21 days annual paid holiday
Work permit and residency as allowed under Vietnamese law with the appropriate university degree and clear criminal record, or costs of visa for tourism or business
5.5 day work week, 40 hours a week
We are unable to pay staff health insurance unfortunately until the funds increase, but require that all employees have some type of travel or expat coverage that includes repatriation and medical evacuation.
All staff and volunteers also must have rabies vaccinations which can be acquired upon arrival.
Shelter work hours are 6am-9am and 4-5pm shifts in the summer, later in winter, but we need to be in the house before 10pm when staying there in order to keep the dogs quiet for the neighbors. Mobile clinic hours will vary depending on location. Your ability to manage your own time and just get things done as needed is vital because this is a management job and no one is tracking your time. Taking 2 hour lunches and naps is absolutely fine and encouraged as long as you are getting the work done. This is not a 9-5 job. As the operations director, you may be required to handle shelter duties for 37 animals when the shelter staff are off, sick, are on holidays, or during emergencies like typhoons, but a bare minimum of 50% of the work is on the computer.
Please only apply if you have international work experience in developing countries. The position requires the ability to creatively solve problems with a low budget in a country lacking rule of law with low resources for animal care and public health and a barely existing regulatory infrastructure. Vietnam is a beautiful country with amazing vegan food and incredible hospitality, but the reality of working with animals in Vietnam is not as charming most days as what you’ll see on the tourist brochures. The daily contact with preventable suffering and death can be very difficult for most people, and it takes some time to understand how to stick to this and press on. There are many challenges that require the mentality to color outside the lines and to adapt to a situation very much unlike your own country. Without having lived abroad in this sort of situation, it would be very difficult to manage an organization within this context. This is not a position for your first time in a country like Vietnam, but for someone already accustomed to learning and adapting to new cultures in different political and economic systems.
