About the Pulmonary Hypertension Association

Founded in 1991 by patients, for patients, the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA) is the oldest and largest nonprofit patient association in the world dedicated to the pulmonary hypertension community. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a rare, chronic and life-threatening disease of the lungs for which no cure currently exists. Our mission is to extend and improve the lives of those affected by PH. To achieve our mission, PHA engages people with PH and their families, caregivers, healthcare providers and researchers worldwide who work together to advocate for the PH community, provide support to patients, caregivers and families, offer up-to-date education and information on PH, improve quality patient care and fund and promote research.

Join PHA’s award-winning communications team

We are seeking a creative, innovative team player to be PHA’s graphic designer. In this exciting role, you’ll produce our quarterly flagship magazine, create social media graphics, design brochures and develop web templates, coordinate print production, help manage brand consistency and support the Communications and Marketing department and PHA departments with print and digital design needs.

Essential responsibilities

  • Design, lay out and help manage print production for PHA’s quarterly magazine, Pathlight.
  • In collaboration with the Communications team and other stakeholders, develop concepts and design 2022 conference website and related graphics. 
  • Develop concepts and graphics for communications and marketing campaigns, including digital and print collateral, such as website and email banners, infographics, social media graphics, brochures, handouts, reports, postcards, etc. 
  • Create designs for trade show booths and signage, programs and collateral for conferences, workshops, symposia and other events.
  • Source, select and size images for digital newsletters, website and print publications.
  • In collaboration with the Communications team, update PHA design and brand guidelines.
  • Develop relationships with printers, acquire bids and help select preferred vendors for specific projects.
  • Develop and execute logos, displays and signage for PHA events and outreach.
  • Help with video editing and creation of video branding elements.
  • Review materials to assess adherence to brand guidelines.
  • Update existing and create new PowerPoint templates, letterhead, and other office collateral.
  • Support the efforts of the Communications and Marketing department and the entire organization as needed.

Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred. Equivalent experience may be substituted

Required skills and experience

  • Four to six years of graphic design experience.
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite software (InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator) and Microsoft Office.
  • Interest in magazine design.
  • Basic knowledge of web design.
  • Working knowledge of print production process (i.e. file setup, project bidding). 
  • Highly organized, customer-service focused and adept at working on deadline, managing multiple projects at once. 
  • Self-motivated, collaborative, and able to work independently.
  • Attentive proofreader and effective writer.
  • Understanding of nonprofit culture and familiarity with AP style a plus.

SALARY RANGE

  • $45,000 - $55,000

Work environment/conditions

Working conditions are normal for an office environment. This position might require flexible scheduling to accommodate occasional weekend and/or evening work.

Location: Office is in Silver Spring, Maryland. Washington, D.C.-area candidates preferred.

Remote work: PHA employees currently work from home because the COVID-19 pandemic. PHA expects to adopt a hybrid in-person/remote work model starting in January 2022.
