Higher Achievement, a nationally acclaimed nonprofit organization working to close the achievement gap for motivated, yet underserved students from low-income communities, seeks a Volunteer and Partnerships Coordinator at the Baltimore affiliate.
Position Summary: The Volunteer and Partnerships Coordinator is responsible for recruitment, training, retention, screening, and orientating the affiliate’s corps of weekly mentors, volunteer study hall aides, and other organizational volunteers. Currently, the Baltimore affiliate engages a growing number of more than 100 volunteers each year. The Volunteer and Partnerships Coordinator will identify, build, steward, and expand volunteer recruitment partnerships by engaging with universities, corporations, government agencies, and other entities. This position will enhance and manage internal systems to support volunteer involvement as a resource to address organizational priorities. This position will also coordinate other volunteer engagement opportunities, such as the annual speaker series and select corporate service days. Moreover, the Coordinator will, especially in volunteer recruitment off-season, assist the Executive Director and Manager of Development with fundraising activities.
Higher Achievement works to close the achievement gap for motivated, yet underserved, students from low-income communities. We intervene during the critical transition to middle school by providing year-round, multi-year support for students in the 5th – 8th grades. As they prepare to graduate from the 8th grade, we help them transition successfully to advanced high school programs that keep them on track for college. On average, 96% of Higher Achievement scholars who complete the program advance to top academic high school programs and 94% advance to college.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Design and implement volunteer orientations, trainings, workshops, and celebration events according to a yearly calendar, to meet demand, and adhering to Higher Achievement policies and procedures.
- In partnership with staff from other affiliates, coordinate and document supplemental trainings and workshops annually that develop the skills of mentors and address current needs.
- Maintain calendar for all program/office volunteer needs and schedule volunteers to meet agency needs
- Drive all volunteer retention efforts, including evaluation of current retention systems, understanding of best practices, and design/implementation of new systems, including building staff awareness around mentor retention and recognition
- Oversee utilization of Higher Achievement’s mentor and scholar management tools. Ensure data integrity and comprehensive data entry related to volunteer outputs and outcomes.
- Support Managers of Instruction through making changes to volunteer assignments and addressing concerns when necessary
- Provide ongoing communication with new and existing volunteers to contribute to a positive volunteer experience and drive volunteer retention
- Evaluate the mentor experience through focus groups, surveys, and observations; improve systems as needed
- Document and institutionalize best practices in coordination with all affiliates, updating materials for staff and volunteers when necessary
- Manage on-going nightly feedback system; collect and analyze data as it compares with demographic information and individual mentor metrics.
- In partnership with Managers of Instruction, lead the development, completion, documentation, and implementation of an annual volunteer recognition plan for each center and affiliate.
- Identify and develop new volunteer recruitment partnerships through research, prospecting, outreach and relationship cultivation.
- Coordinate and support the Managers of Instruction at each Achievement Center in the volunteer recruitment process
- Empower mentors to support Higher Achievement’s recruitment efforts by building our profile within their respective schools and places of employment, improving and strengthening “word of mouth” strategies.
- Manage and improve on current system for tracking recruitment pipelines and partnerships
- Partner with staff to promote volunteer opportunities through message boards, service groups, social media, and other means.
- Manage and update marketing materials for volunteer engagement.
- Manage and support the volunteer screening process: managing online volunteer applications, interviewing, and background clearance process.
- Steward and deepen existing volunteer recruitment partnerships, including university partners, corporations, civic societies, government agencies, and other organizations.
- Coordinate volunteers and serve as point of contact for all agency internal events, outreach and community events; including, volunteer speaker series and one-time corporate group volunteer engagement opportunities.
- In partnership with the team, plan and attend site visits, tours and events that showcase the program for current and prospective volunteer partners and other investors.
- Ensure all external postings are consistent and current for all opportunities, year-round

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Minimum of one year of full-time relevant experience required
- Experience working with volunteers and understanding of best practices in volunteer management, including training, recognition, and appreciation
- Authentic, effective, and professional communication style, with excellent public speaking and presentation skills and the ability to make presentations to large groups of people
- Strong project management and organization skills, with the ability to track intricate details and prioritize multiple initiatives and timelines
- Experience working directly with youth in a mentoring or educational setting strongly preferred
- Knowledge of current issues influencing public education, the youth development field, and mentoring
- Strong communication skills; ability to effectively communicate by email, phone, and in-person
- Experience building relationships with diverse stakeholders, such as individual volunteers, community partners, local companies; ability to make large group presentations and engaging in community outreach
- Strong technology skills including familiarity with Office 365 and experience using/updating a database

Physical Requirements and Work Environment: Work is performed partially in an office environment as well as within the community. The employee regularly sits at a computer station and operates electronic equipment two to eight hours per day. The employee also regularly spends time standing, walking, and climbing stairs and regularly lifts, carries, and positions objects weighting up to 20 pounds. The employee communicates with adults by phone and in-person, often in large group settings with voice projection needed. Position involves regular use of a computer and keyboard, telephone, and face-to-face communication in small and large group settings; employee must be able to communicate clearly and professionally in all of these manners. Employee must have visual, auditory, and physical ability to respond to critical incidents involving students and act in an emergency situation.
