Founded in 1842, the New York Philharmonic is the oldest symphony orchestra in the United States, and one of the oldest in the world. Each season the Philharmonic connects with up to 50 million music lovers through live concerts in New York City and on its worldwide tours and residencies as well as with its digital recording series; international broadcasts on television, radio, and online; and as a resource through its varied education programs and expansive digital archive.

The Director of Institutional & Corporate Giving is a key member of the Development team that supports the Philharmonic’s efforts to build philanthropic relationships with foundations, corporations, and government agencies. The successful candidate will lead a three-person team to meet and exceed revenue goals, develop, and execute strategies to increase engagement, and increase the pipeline for future years. Key responsibilities include, the identification and evaluation of prospective donors, writing proposals, LOIs, and other solicitation materials, providing high-level stewardship of current donors through quality written reports and related communications, and conducting outreach to further develop the pipeline through networking events, and meetings. The position will collaborate interdepartmentally to meet established goals for all Philharmonic programs and initiatives. This person will also provide lead writing/editing support for the entire Institutional & Corporate Giving team.

Responsibilities

  • Design effective strategies to increase engagement through assessing opportunities, strategic and tactical planning and cultivating relationships with current and prospective foundations and corporations.
  • Manage a portfolio of active and prospective private foundations and corporate partners.
  • Actively identify and solicit gifts from foundations, corporations, and government agencies to support New York Philharmonic concerts, festivals and galas, education programs, international tours, and community outreach activities.
  • Lead and mentor a team of two Institutional Giving Officers and a Manager of Corporate Sponsorships.
  • Create and edit proposals, reports, LOIs, and other correspondence to submission to foundation, corporate, and government funders.
  • Collaborate and regularly report to the Director of Development to determine annual budget goals and activity from corporations and foundations.
  • Follow and implement current applicable philanthropic trends and best practices surrounding foundation and corporate giving to creatively secure funding.
  • Perform other job-related responsibilities as requested or assigned by the Director of Development of the VP, Development.
  • Miscellaneous duties as required.


Requirements

A strategic thinker with 7-10 years of progressive experience in raising funds from Institutional and Corporate donors, as well as with government agencies, preferably in a large institutional environment; a college degree; strong analytical skills; exceptional written and oral communication skills; and proven success in raising funds. Enthusiasm for classical music and knowledge of Tessitura preferred.
