Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced, dynamic environmental advocate with a strong record of achievement to join Riverkeeper as our Director of Community Partnerships, a new program at Riverkeeper. The successful applicant will be a strong leader and experienced community organizer who can provide leadership and support for Riverkeeper’s advocacy campaigns throughout our mission area of the Hudson River watershed. The Director of Community Partnerships must be skilled at managing a team of advocates, and collaborating with other Riverkeeper staff and numerous partners, including community members, environmental and community organizations, legislative bodies, and government agencies. The position has an important role in achieving Riverkeeper’s goals related to diversity, equity, inclusion and justice.

The Director will create and implement a vision for the Community Partnerships Program, building on Riverkeeper’s new strategic plan. The Director of Community Partnerships will report to the Vice President of Programs, which is a new and yet to be hired position. In the interim, the Director of Community Partnerships will report directly to Riverkeeper’s President. The Director will oversee three full time staff members: Legislative Policy Manager, Senior Program Coordinator, and Guardians/Riverkeeper Coordinator, as well as seasonal volunteers and interns.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

Strategic Program Development and Execution

-       Envision and build a strong Community Partnerships Program;

-       Design and implement advocacy campaigns, in partnership with the Legal, Science and Patrol Programs and the Communications and Development Departments, that achieve Riverkeeper’s goals;

-       Play a hands-on role in many campaigns, utilizing various strategies to achieve campaign goals, such as community organizing, coalition building, strategic media engagement and lobbying;

-       Build relationships and foster communication and collaboration with communities, leadership and staff of government agencies and legislative bodies in support of both existing campaigns and new initiatives;

-       Improve participation in Riverkeeper campaigns by people and communities of color and lower socio-economic communities;

-       Develop and implement effective systems to manage communications and workflows among team members and between other Programs and Departments.

Organizational Leadership

-       Participate in decision-making for the organization, provide input and feedback to senior management team members, help design and implement staff and board meeting agendas, and effectively track and regularly report outputs and outcomes for the Program; 

-       Communicate management decisions effectively to team members, and ensure decision-making is appropriately inclusive of staff team perspectives;

-       Play a key role in developing and implementing goals and strategies identified by an ongoing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice initiative at Riverkeeper. Be a leader in Riverkeeper’s external work through the design and implementation of outreach, advocacy and community organizing strategies, as well as a leader and champion for Riverkeeper’s internal work to promote an equitable and inclusive work environment;

-       Participate in fundraising campaigns, corporate sponsorship programs, grant applications and reporting, and donor relations as needed.

Team Management

-       Manage a team of community organizers and lobbyists;

-       Create and implement annual work plans for the Program and each team member;

-       Create a positive and productive work environment, and identify professional development needs and opportunities for each team member;

-       Draft and manage an annual budget for the Program, in consultation with the President and Chief Financial Officer.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate has at least 10 years of relevant experience, and would likely be described as:

●      An experienced community organizer who has created and implemented at least 5 successful advocacy campaigns that achieve community goals;

●      A team player who is able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse partner organizations and communities, members of the public, volunteers, and internally, with other departments and volunteer leadership;

●      Having demonstrated ability to interact effectively with elected officials and agencies at all levels of government;

●      A manager with experience creating a supportive environment that gets the best out of a team, and who is able to prioritize, delegate, and handle multiple projects and deadlines;

●      A team leader who is entrepreneurial, self-motivated, results oriented;

●      Having a strong commitment to the mission, vision, values and goals of Riverkeeper, and a commitment to promoting diversity, equity, inclusion and justice through work for a non-profit organization;

●      Having a connection to the Hudson River and its watershed, and a general familiarity with Riverkeeper’s priority issues, preferred;

●      Able to travel throughout the Hudson River Watershed and New York City. Evening and occasional weekend work will be required;

 

Location

Riverkeeper is based in Ossining, New York, with additional offices in White Plains and Kington. This position will be located in the Ossining office, but will have flexibility and be able to work from other locations. Currently, due to Covid, almost all staff are working remotely and we do not expect a return to the office until at least late Spring 2021.

 

Compensation and Benefits

This is a band 3 position. Compensation is commensurate with experience ranging from $95,000 to $105,000. This position is full time (37.5 hours/week) and must be flexible to work some nights and occasional weekends.
