 Staff Accountant

About CLW (Council for a Livable World) and CACNP (Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation

The Council for a Livable World (CLW) is a non-partisan 501(c)4 non-profit organization that promotes policies to reduce and eventually eliminate nuclear weapons. CLW advocates for a more principled approach to U.S. national security and foreign policy and seeks to increase peace and security and to reduce the threat of war and nuclear weapons by representing our members in Washington D.C. and endorsing congressional candidates who support our goals.

CLW’s work is complemented by its “sister” organization The Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation (CACNP).

The Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation (CACNP), a 501(c)3 non-profit education, research and policy analysis organization, that has its own network of nuclear and defense experts. Center produces research, reports, op-eds, factsheets and briefings to inform and enhance the policy discourse in Washington DC, across the United States, and internationally. Its mission, too, is to reduce the risk of war and halt and eventually eliminate the spread of nuclear weapons.

 General Statement of Duties:

Center and Council seek a full-time Staff Accountant to support the Controller’s work efforts in general. There is a need for such accountant to work immediately with Council’s endorsed-candidate conduits (‘bundling’ is the industry term) and with payroll matters including those involved for states outside of the DC area regarding employee withholding and unemployment taxes, and any other state requirements that may be involved once any such payroll tax accounts are established.

Eventually it is anticipated that the position trajectory will expand from the Staff Accountant’s management of the bundling process and some payroll functions into learning and being responsible for assisting the Controller with the full scope of the accounting cycle at the organizations.

This position will require data entry for donations, and processing of credit-card donations, as well as updating the organizations’ donor databases for address and other changes. From time to time, as presently, the organizations may employ a part time staff member to assist in these functions during which time the staff accountant will be responsible for working with and supervising such efforts.

Gradually – primarily commencing in 2023 when election cycle responsibilities have slowed in the “off-election” year, work with controller to learn and master the full cycle of accounting for Council and Center, from bookkeeping through financial statements and audit prep and 990s; Grant reporting for existing grants and prospective grants for all organizations; and increase considerable attention to learning our databases by working with them.

This position’s responsibilities will be performed in our office location and not remotely unless specific allowance is made by the executive Director, at his sole discretion.

Supervision Received:

Direct Supervision: Controller; Ultimate Supervision: Executive Director

Salary range: $47,500-$55,000 depending on experience.
