About Us

Founded in 2003, the Transgender Legal Defense & Educational Fund (TLDEF) is a national organization committed to advancing justice and equity for transgender people through impact litigation, direct legal services, advocacy, and public education. This year TLDEF has worked with a number of the nation’s largest insurers to successfully obtain removal of transgender health exclusions covering millions of members nationwide. We have brought Miami-Dade County to the negotiating table to end abuses against transgender detainees in their jail system, building on our 2020 success obtaining one of the nation’s strongest jail policies to protect transgender inmates in New York. We have also succeeded in improving court rules governing name changes in several states. And we’re just getting started. And we’re just getting started. TLDEF is now engaged in a strategic planning process and brand refresh to sharpen its focus and guide its future development and growth.

The Opportunity

TLDEF is adding a new and exciting position to its growing staff and seeks an entrepreneurial and highly organized Institutional Giving Officer who is eager to join a high growth organization at a critical time for transgender rights. In less than three years, TLDEF’s annual budget has more than doubled in size from $831K to $2M+ as a direct result of the Executive Director’s plan to scale our organization to meet the challenges and opportunities that face our movement. We are seeking a strong relationship manager who has experience building and maintaining a diverse portfolio of effective institutional relationships focused on ensuring TLDEF’s strategic priorities are effectively resourced. Reporting to the Director of Development, the successful candidate will possess both the technical and interpersonal skills required to own all aspects of institutional giving.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Manage a growing portfolio of foundation relationships currently valued at $600,000 with a focus on building strong, sustainable relationships.
  • Manage a portfolio of city and state government contracts currently valued at $485,000 and shepherd the contracts process from initial application to execution.
  • Regularly research and identify foundation prospects and cultivate strong leads with an eye toward increasing foundation support.
  • Produce all grant proposals, reports, and additional collateral related to foundation and government funding solicitations.
  • Establish and implement systems to ensure effective grant writing processes, including application and reporting calendars and internal communications with program staff to craft accurate and up-to-date proposals and reports.
  • Develop an institutional donor communications plan (i.e., email updates, funder briefings, etc.) to ensure foundations and government agencies are kept informed of timely or breaking developments.
  • Collaborate with the senior team and program staff in the preparation and execution of relationship-building among prospects, stewardship activities, and proposal development and reporting.
  • Actively work across development and program teams to identify and determine funding opportunities and priorities for existing and new programs.
  • Assist with all aspects of preparation for foundation or government agency meetings. Represent TLDEF at funder meetings or gatherings as needed.
  • Work with program staff to ensure institutional giving opportunities consistently align with the organization’s needs.
  • Analyze grant award letters for terms and conditions and translate them into deliverable deadlines. Ensure a timely acknowledgment process.
  • Partner with the Operations Manager to formulate budgets and ensure all foundation grants and government contracts are properly tracked and reconciled. Maintain timely and accurate records for compliance purposes.
  • Provide counsel to the Director of Development and Executive Director about timely and relevant developments related to TLDEF’s foundation grants and government contracts.
  • Partner effectively with the Director of Development to achieve development goals.
  • Participate in the successful completion of special projects and other duties as assigned.
