Community Worker

1 year contract position - 28 hours/week ($20/hr)

About The Depot Community Food Centre

Founded in 1986, the Depot Community Food Centre is a community-based non-profit organization that works collaboratively with its community to address the root causes of hunger and poverty in NDG and the surrounding areas in a manner that ensures dignity, community engagement and the development of human potential.

At the Depot Community Food Centre, we offer a variety of food-related activities to support the food security and healthy eating habits of youth, families and individuals. Our activities are classified in three streams: Food Access, Food Skills and Urban Agriculture.

We are currently looking to hire a Community Worker to contribute to our Resource Department.

About The Position

The Community Worker position supports the resource team in its efforts to provide safe and inclusive spaces where community members access services, socialize and build networks, and collectively share and practice new skills.

The Community Worker will work with participants across all of our programs to ensure that they are supported beyond food relief and linked with Depot and community resources. They will be available to participants via program visits, one-on-one appointments, and on the phone, and will work with participants to advocate for themselves and for their communities.

The Community Worker will work with the Depot community to increase awareness of poverty and marginalization, inequality and food systems issues and create opportunities for community members to lead in a push for social change.

Finally, the Community Worker will work to strengthen and deepen relationships with existing and new community partners to promote and coordinate resource sharing and to strengthen advocacy work across our territory.

As the Covid 19 pandemic continues to change the way we are able to work with our community, the way that the community worker engages participants day to day will also continue to adapt in accordance with required safety measures. This means allocating time to the Depot’s emergency food distribution service, meetings via telephone and online platforms, and often working from home.
