Flamboyan Foundation seeks an Associate, External Affairs for our Washington, D.C. office. The person in this position will support cross-departmental and cross-organizational coordination for the external affairs team and distribute family engagement resources internally and externally to ensure that Flamboyan effectively pushes forward its external influence and engagement strategies. The ideal candidate has strong attention to detail and an ability to understand the needs of families and educators.

What You Will Do

The Associate, External Affairs (Associate) works out of our Washington, D.C. office and reports to the Senior Managing Director, External Affairs (SMD). You support the cross-departmental and cross-organizational coordination for the external affairs team at Flamboyan. The team’s functions include communications and marketing, public affairs, and product development. You work closely with teams across the organization in DC and Puerto Rico and partner externally to ensure that Flamboyan effectively pushes forward its external influence and engagement strategies. You provide foundational infrastructure for the team by supporting team operations, research, coordinating logistics for internal and external meetings, and supporting the development of resources and products that help Flamboyan to grow its reach.

Responsibilities

Operations & Logistics

  • Support SMD with day-to-day logistics of managing the team including managing project dashboard, coordinating team and inter-team meetings and retreats, infusing these experiences with diversity, equity, and inclusivity
  • Support the development and management of audience and network lists, including in our emerging customer relationship management system
  • Manage logistics and end-to-end event planning and execution for external affairs-led events including but not limited to task force meetings, coalition meetings, listening sessions, focus-groups, and internal meetings - infusing these experiences with diversity, equity, and inclusivity
  • Coordinate closely on project management and event execution with cross-functional teams including program, evaluation, and operations

Public Affairs

  • Draft policy summaries including analysis of legislation, policy, and other initiatives as assigned
  • Draft materials including but not limited to invitations, detailed agendas, 1-pagers, briefing documents, FAQ sheets, presentation decks, and other collateral, applying an equity lens to ensure diverse audiences have adequate access to content and understanding
  • Conduct research projects as needed including, but not limited to, landscape assessments and issue-based research, and audience backgrounders, with a focus on diversity and equity dimensions and seeking to include the voices and perspectives of marginalized people and communities
  • Represent the external affairs department and SMD at internal and external education-related events as needed, producing follow up summaries and recaps

Team Support

  • Support product development efforts as needed via the production of resources, toolkits, and tools, in support of building a resource hub on Flamboyan’s website, ensuring resources are equitably compelling and accessible
  • Support the communications team with occasional blogging, website updates, and event support

Other Responsibilities

  • Maintain an ongoing project calendar and ensure deadlines are met or exceeded
  • Support the SMD as needed on tasks and special projects

  • Serve as an ambassador for Flamboyan’s organizational brand generally and our family engagement work specifically locally and nationally

Qualifications

  • Experience with Microsoft Office required; experience with social media platforms preferred
  • Natural propensity to analyze problems, identify solutions, and foresee opportunities for innovation and improvement
  • Highly organized with a propensity for project management
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Ability to turn around work quickly and proactively meet deadlines
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Continuous learner with a hunger to understand and contribute to our work
  • Experience in education and/or education systems is a plus
  • 1-3 years experience
