Purpose of the Position

Eos has provided value to AGU throughout its nearly 100-year history. In 2014 Eos was relaunched as a digital-first source of Earth and space science news and perspectives accompanied by a full- color, print magazine for members. The relaunch was very successful and Eos has grown in stature, reach, and impact. In early 2019, the editorial focus and content strategy of Eos will be revisited and updated as part of AGU’s digital transformation initiative. The Director/Editor in Chief will be part of a team that will define and design this next stage in Eos’s evolution, with input from the community, and will lead the Eos through this transition.

The Director/Editor in Chief, Eos, is responsible for developing and evolving Eos to realize its purpose and vision. Eos is a primary source of Earth and space science news, information, and perspectives for the worldwide Earth and space science community and aspires to be a resource to those in applied and allied fields as well as the science media and the science-interested public. The EiC forges relationships with scientists and thought leaders in Earth and space science to ensure that Eos has its finger on the pulse of the community. He/she liaisons with and guides the Eos Editors and the volunteer Editorial Advisory Board to explore and vet the topics, trends and people that shape the field. On a day-to-day basis, the EiC oversees the News, Scientific Content, and Production functions of Eos.

What the Director/Editor in Chief, Eos does

  • Provides editorial leadership

-  Charts the editorial direction of Eos by creating and updating an editorial plan, reflecting the content strategy.

-  Leads the development of editorial priorities for Eos news and scientific content (both invited and submitted articles); oversees the content schedule with an eye to ensuring that major events and issues are considered for coverage in a timely manner.

-  Leads acquisition of opinion pieces and the development of series or special articles by collaborating with others and by researching, identifying, and cultivating relationships with established thought leaders and emerging leaders across the sciences AGU represents as well as those in areas of policy, communications, funding, and applied fields. Pursues prospects for opinion pieces and scientific content.

-  Consults with and directs/advises the news editor on news coverage plans and priorities, provides coaching on standards and practices and helps to identify news gaps, opportunities, and sources.

-  Consults with and directs/advises the editor responsible for Eos Centennial content.

-  Reviews and vets scientific submissions. Oversees the scientific review of articles and evaluates the decisions of the Editors. 

-  Plays a leadership role in AGU’s Editorial Center, which collaborates to identify, develop and promote content and campaigns across AGU digital services and communications channels that serve our Earth and space science community and our organization.

  • Manages relationships across the Earth and space science community to grow Eos’s reputation and contributor base.

-  Serves as an Eos/AGU ambassador, decision-maker, and key advisor.

-  Leads recruiting and selection of the Eos Editors (leading member scientists who are compensated for this role) and the companion volunteer editorial advisory board to ensure their full engagement and contribution. With the SVP/MCD, updates and adapts the role of the Eos Editors and Editorial Advisory Board.

-  Represents Eos by presenting and participating in briefings and discussions with AGU Committees, EiC meetings, and other member and community gatherings such as Fall Meeting.

  • Shapes the Eos digital experience and provides direction for the print magazine, and all byproducts

-  Performs a high-level quality control function to ensure that Eos content is shaped and expressed in ways that will achieve the desired impact and impression on readers and users.

-  Provides direction and support for Eos social media

-  Collaborates with the Marketing Team and the digital transformation staff and consultants to inform the development of user journeys and marketing campaigns, including assistance with identifying target markets.

-  Interprets and applies learning and insight from data such as web analytics, stakeholder input, and findings from surveys and user testing; helps others to interpret and apply findings.

-  Recommends digital content and/or user experience changes or improvements.

  • Provides production and administrative leadership

-  Consults on plans for magazine production with the production manager, including stories identified for feature treatment. Helps to identify opportunities to improve processes. Participates in review of magazine proofs.

-  Ensures smooth workflow for Research Spotlights and content inputs from other departments, including overseeing the status and assignment of freelance editors and writers; negotiates contracts with freelance writers, editors, and production staff.

-  Directs the editorial and production coordinator and her management of the GEMS publishing system by reviewing the status of submissions, coaching on communications with authors, and approving the prioritization of the workload. Directs the editorial and production coordinator’s invitations of tributes and other invited content.

-  Manages the hiring, mentoring, coaching, and evaluation of staff. Identifies needs and opportunities for staff development and skills-building across Eos (and related work groups) and provides appropriate training and development opportunities; for example, in science journalism, science writing, digital culture, and tools.

-  Manages key internal relationships with teams with which Eos collaborates closely: Branding & Design, Publications, Public Information, Social Media, Strategic Communications, and Marketing teams among others.

-  Oversees and is accountable for the Eos budget. Reviews recommendations from managers, finalizes budget presented for Director’s approval, regularly tracks budget, and makes changes as needed.

-  Identifies and pursues processes and/or new tools that streamline the work of Eos and its effectiveness.

-  Other duties as assigned.

What the Director/Editor in Chief, Eos brings to the team

·      10+ years professional editorial experience with Bachelor’s degree; 8+ years with Master’s degree in journalism, science, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

·      Senior level management experience in a science news, science media, or science publishing organization, with significant responsibility for news or editorial content.

·      Experience managing change and developing staff.

·      Experience developing and overseeing an expense budget.

·      Demonstrated expertise serving as an editorial leader in the newsroom of a publishing, media, or non-profit organization or association.

·      Demonstrated ability to recruit high-quality contributors and to network and collaborate to grow content and its impact.

·      Knowledge of the broad news and information marketplace as well as the science news marketplace and current practices.

·      Strong understanding of the challenges and opportunities in a digital-first news environment. Knowledge of social media, taxonomy, tagging standards, search engine optimization, and analytics as they relate to news and to science publishing.

·      High level of familiarity with science and science news; specific and expert knowledge of Earth and space sciences and their impact is highly desirable.

·      Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communications skills; advanced ability to adapt communications to the audience.

·      Record of success identifying, recruiting, developing, coaching, and managing editorial, news, and production staff.

·      Demonstrated ability to convey complex ideas and high-level science through effective writing, editing, and storytelling in Eos as well as for AGU volunteers. 

·      Effective and reliable collaborator and partner.

·      Strong listening, coaching, and communications skills.

·      Ability to multitask under the pressing deadlines.

·      Ability to work effectively and accurately in a fast-paced environment, to juggle multiple priorities and be highly flexible and nimble.

·      Ability to exercise highest level of discretion on both internal and external confidential matters, and to maintain high level of confidentiality, included but not limited to strategic planning initiatives, contracts, budgeting, and personnel matters.

·      Ability to budget and monitor budget.

·      Experience and in-depth knowledge of computer software and demonstrated proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
