This job vacancy is for fulltime work, onsite, in Mandan, ND, with Water Protector Legal Collective.
The Communications Coordinator/Director is responsible for the development and delivery of strategic communications highlighting WPLC’s efforts in defending Water Protectors and serving a critical role in the NoDAPL pipeline struggle as well as the broader Standing Rock movement to protect the water and efforts to expand and advance Indigenous sovereignty and rights.
The position identifies, develops, and tells WPLC’s stories and utilizes various platforms to showcase the lives and work of Water Protectors, staff and volunteers and their efforts and achievements and the issues they are addressing.
As an integral member of the WPLC staff team, the Communications Coordinator/Director works closely and collaboratively with WPLC legal staff, development staff, Water Protectors, and attorneys to advance WPLC's messaging and the objectives arising from the Standing Rock protest movement and to support broader organizational strategies as they develop.
Candidates with substantial non-profit management experience will be considered for the Communications Director role, which serves as a member of the WPLC Leadership Team and is assigned management responsibilities in addition to Communications work. Candidates without non-profit management experience will be considered for the Communications Coordinator role.
- Design and coordinate communications strategy that advances WPLC’s legal defense and offense program goals.
- Coordinate strategic communications responses to issues that arise.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships/contacts with local (Mandan/Bismarck), regional and national media outlets.
- Research, write and edit content including: news releases, media advisories, web copy, social media posts and other materials.
- Create or lead the creation of video pieces that tell our stories.
- Curate content for and manage social media and work with technical consultants to manage the website.
- Work with Development staff to create updates, narratives and programmatic reports for fundraising purposes.
- Supervise and support communications consultants as necessary.
- Draft media information and stories regarding WPLC’s work and to advance key messages. This includes writing and synthesizing technical materials on complex legal topics and communicating information in a manner easily understood by non-specialists.
- Develop and implement strategies to increase awareness of WPLC, developments and outcomes of legal cases, advancement of legal, civil, indigenous and inherent rights, and the continued efforts at Standing Rock and elsewhere to fight pipelines and advance Indigenous sovereignty.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- At least 2 years’ of professional experience in communications, journalism, public relations or related fields, including creating written materials for public distribution is required.
- Must have relationships/contacts with local (Mandan/Bismarck), regional or national media outlets and experience producing content (press, video or other) with a good track record of redistribution by media outlets.
- Some college required, Masters degree in a related field is preferred.
- Legal training and experience working in a law office or other legal organization context is strongly preferred but not required.
- Experience living and/or working in Indigenous communities and/or experience working in support of progressive political movements are also both strong assets.
- Must be able to work collectively and collaboratively with a diverse staff, volunteers and community members.
- Superior organizational, time management, and communication skills in a movement oriented work environment.
- Nonprofit management experience would be a strong asset and could lead to the position being a Director role as a member of the management team. Non-profit management experience is required for the position to be Communication Director role – others will be in a Communications Coordinator role.
- Commitment to Water Protector movement support and advancing Indigenous sovereignty is required and applicants must not have ties to law enforcement or the oil and gas industry.
