Workers Defense Project (WDP) and Workers Defense Action Fund (WDAF) is seeking a full-time Grants Manager to lead, manage and grow our 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 foundation and government grants funding in Texas and nationally.  The Grants Manager will work closely with the Co-Executive Directors, Development Director and others in helping to secure funding. 

The successful candidate will be an excellent writer and have demonstrated ability in grants management, including research, cultivation with executive staff, grant writing and reporting, and will embrace the challenges of translating grassroots organizing into strong grant proposals and demonstrating to funders why this work is urgent and necessary. They will be committed to getting results in a fast-paced environment and able to handle a heavy workload. 

About Workers Defense Project

Created in 2002, WDP is a 501(c)3, statewide, membership-based organization devoted to workers’ rights and advocacy, chiefly aiming to build power among Texas construction workers. Its mission – to empower low-income workers to achieve fair employment through education, direct services, organizing and strategic partnerships – is accomplished through a network of dedicated staff, volunteers and members. WDP has won numerous awards for its cutting-edge achievements within one of the country’s most difficult climates for workers. The New York Times described WDP as “one of the most creative organizations for immigrant workers in the country.”

About Workers Defense Action Fund

Workers Defense Action Fund (WDAF) is a 501(c)4 organization that seeks to build a long-lasting infrastructure that will engage working Texans in the electoral and legislative processes that affect their lives. WDAF educates and informs voters about their rights, advocates for stronger protections for workers and engages historically underrepresented voters in campaigns to elect representatives that care about working families' needs.

JOB DESCRIPTION: GRANTS MANAGER

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop a firm understanding of Workers Defense programs by meeting with program staff on an ongoing basis;
  • Research private foundations, corporate and government funding prospects for our 501(c)3 and 501(c)4;
  • Write and successfully submit grant proposals for foundation, corporate and government funding sources;
  • Monitor the grant process, including reporting deadlines, engaging with funders, etc.;
  • Perform all editorial and administrative activities necessary for the timely submission of all proposals, submissions, acknowledgments, reports, and other communications as needed;
  • Maintain up-to-date grant information in the organization’s database (CiviCRM)
  • Supervise and recruit development volunteers/interns to manage data entry and grant research;
  • Steward funder cultivation efforts through ongoing contact with representatives of funding sources; coordinate site visits (if applicable) and draft related correspondence;
  • Meet regularly with the Development Team to determine fundraising strategies;
  • Regularly track funding secured through foundation, corporate/organization and government grants;
  • Together with the co-Executive Directors and Development Director, determine which grants to apply for and which programs to allocate grants to;
  • Help ensure appropriate allocation of grant funds by meeting regularly with Director of Operations and Finance Team, and by tracking grants receivable;
  • Provide suggestions to executive leadership regarding termination decisions based on required deliverables;
  • Suggest which programs, positions, and employees are likely to be terminated based on likelihood of securing grant funding;
  • Meet with program staff regularly to determine deliverables for foundation, corporate and government grants and track progress/metrics;
  • Manage grant compliance by keeping track of grant deliverables, monitoring progress on deliverables, communicating evaluation requirements to program staff, and managing grant-funded projects when needed;
  • Maintain excellent grants management systems, keeping detailed, organized records of metrics, data/database records, grant proposals, etc.;
  • Strong project manager who is comfortable organizing large amounts of information, assigning tasks to others, and achieving results;
  • Assist with preparation of proposals to union funders as needed;
  • Perform all related activities as may be assigned and support the development team as needed.

Job Requirements:

  • At least two years of previous grant writing and management experience (including winning proposals to foundations or corporations);
  • Excellent communication skills, including superior writing skills and ability to persuasively convey program results;
  • Strong organizational skills and exceptionally detail oriented;
  • Flexible work attitude: the ability to work in a team environment and independently and ability to meet unexpected demands;
  • Able to research and gather information quickly and easily through interviews, website and database research, and review of internal reports and meeting notes;
  • Enjoys taking ownership of projects with the ability to handle multiple tasks under deadline and a high volume of work;
  • Skilled at data analysis and at using technology/databases;
  • Excellent computer skills: advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Comfortable working with budgets and the accounting/finance team to understand and communicate financial impact of funding requests;
  • Commitment to racial and economic justice;
  • Commitment to grassroots fundraising and building community power;
  • Detail oriented;
  • Strong project management skills and ability to juggle multiple deadlines and priorities;
  • Ability to work irregular hours, including occasional nights and weekends; and
  • Mission-driven and passionate about WDP’s organizing model.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of statewide progressive funding landscape;
  • Experience with foundation grants for both 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 organizations; and
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Compensation:

  • This salary range for this position is $56,000 - $60,000 annually;
  • Employer-paid medical, vision, dental, and life insurance;
  • Employee Assistance Program to support employee’s mental health;
  • Paid leave:  10 days vacation, 10 days sick, and 5 days personal. Six weeks paid parental leave after probationary period (120-days from hire);
  • Paid holidays:  10 paid holidays annually; and
  • Retirement plan with company match.
