The Director of Public Programs manages Rocking the Boat’s suite of hands-on education activities for groups and the larger community. These include group programs for young people in schools and community-based organizations as well as those for adults through professional development, teambuilding, and volunteer opportunities.  The position also oversees the management of the summer Community Rowing Program for the general public. Together, these programs introduce over 4,000 children and adults annually to the beauty and diverse ecology of the Bronx River aboard a fleet of wooden row boats hand built by local youth. This position reports to the Director of Programs and Operations.

Responsibilities include:

Program Development and Execution: Ensuring the planning and implementation of a suite of programs for local youth and adults

·        Develops, delivers, and administers year-round environmental, boating, carpentry and other STEM-inspired programs for groups of youth from collaborating schools and community-based organizations

·        Fulfills all programmatic content and schedule commitments to dedicated funding sources

·        Develops, delivers, and administers adult group programs such as teacher professional development, corporate teambuilding, and volunteer initiatives

·        Oversees the management of the summer Community Rowing program

·        Markets and promotes programs to prospective school, non-profit, and business clients

Staff Supervision and Development: Ensuring that Public Program staff are able to successfully meet program goals

·        Supervises the Assistant Director of Public Programs

·        Hires, trains, and supervises seasonal/temporary positions (e.g., Community Rowing Coordinator) as needed

·        Hires, trains, and supervises up to 10 college-aged Program Assistants

Program Administration: Ensuring the timely and accurate preparation of information and data necessary to deliver successful programs

·        Maintains accurate participant records

·        Coordinates with Finance and Administration Department to ensure proper contracting and invoicing

·        Assists in budget development; tracks program budget; sources and purchases needed materials and equipment within the parameters established in annual budgets; provides timely and accurate accounting of all expenses

·        Supports the Development Department with grant proposals and reporting requirements

Program Facilities, Equipment, and Safety: Ensuring that the physical resources are in place to provide safe and successful programming

·        Follows all Rocking the Boat safety protocols; identifies and corrects any safety issues

·        Manages and maintains Rocking the Boat’s boat inventory including wooden rowing craft and other waterfront equipment such as dollies, oars, and PFDs

·        Maintains classroom and equipment used in the classroom and for field work

Cross-Organization Support: Contributing to the promotion and smooth operations of the organization

·        Supports the Development Department in fund-raising activities as requested

·        Contributes to the maintenance of shared resources

·        Manages program volunteers and hosts visitors

·        Participates in other activities as necessary to fulfill the mission of Rocking the Boat


·        Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Education, Environmental Science, or related environmental education fields

·        Five years professional experience in environmental education curriculum development and delivery

·        Program outreach and recruitment experience

·        Staff management and supervision experience

·        Excellent organizational skills, detail oriented, and an ability to work independently

·        Proficiency in basic computer applications

·        Driver’s License

·        Willingness to work long days and weekends, as necessary

Preferred experience:

·        Boating experience

·        Basic woodworking skills

·        Spanish language skills
