JOB POSTING: PART-TIME ASSISTANT ADVISOR FOR YOUTH GROUP
The Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island is seeking one or two Assistant Youth Advisors for a humanist youth group for teens in grades 8 to 12. Y.E.S., or Youth of Ethical Societies, is a group of high school students who want to make a better world. We meet weekly from September to May on an academic school calendar, to work on community service projects, have discussions, form new friendships, and have fun.The goal is to allow teens the opportunity to perform community service while considering the larger ethical and social issues of our day.Our philosophical framework is humanism, and the leadership is expected to reflect this philosophy. We welcome students from all faith backgrounds. Y.E.S. is sponsored by the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island (www.ehsli.org) and is considered to be an integral part of that community.
JOB REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Assistant Youth Advisor will collaborate on and run projects with senior advisors, lead discussion topics, provide youth leadership, and work on student member recruitment. Y.E.S. meets for approximately 1 hour on Sundays at 11:00 a.m. during the school year. Advisor job hours are from 10:30 to 12:30 on most Sundays that we meet. Due to the nature of community service, some weeks may include Saturdays or Sunday afternoons instead of Sunday mornings.
The position starts in September, 2018.
A Bachelor's Degree or higher is required. Most important is an enthusiasm for teenagers, a creative mind, the ability to develop and lead topics for discussion, and a creative and flexible approach to community service projects.
The candidate will be expected to contribute to or increase our social media presence. (We are currently on Facebook under Long Island Y.E.S.)
Our ideal candidate has a passion for making the world a better place and a commitment to helping teenagers deal with the ethical challenges of an often-fractured world. Our candidate has an interest in youth development, community service, and humanism. A background in volunteerism is a plus.
