Just Detention International (JDI) is recruiting a Program Officer, based in its Los Angeles office; a hybrid work schedule can be accommodated. The Program Officer will be supervised by a Program Director.

JDI is a health and human rights organization that seeks to end sexual abuse in all forms of detention. JDI works to hold government officials accountable for prisoner rape; challenge the attitudes and misperceptions that allow sexual abuse to flourish; and make sure that survivors get the help they need. JDI is dedicated to putting our values around human rights and racial equity into action in our work, internal policies, and hiring practices. The Program Officer will work with the Domestic Program and Survivor Outreach teams. The Program Officer will play a key role in supporting those teams by:

• Providing direct services to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated survivors of sexual abuse via written correspondence, telephone, Zoom, and in-person in detention facilities;
• Facilitating JDI’s therapeutic art workshop program for incarcerated people;
• Assisting in developing training materials and providing technical assistance to corrections officials, rape crisis advocates, and other partners as needed;
• Helping to develop and share dynamic web-based content and materials;
• Working with advocates, corrections staff, and incarcerated people to improve safety and services for incarcerated survivors of sexual abuse;
• Participating in and assisting in scheduling and planning for program meetings, program events, and trainings; providing technological and other logistical support for virtual training programs;
• Assisting with collecting and tracking program data; and
• Assisting with the development of program reports as needed. 

We are looking for a new team member who is committed to protecting the human rights of all people and who is dedicated to social justice, racial justice, and equity. We value kindness in all our team members. The ideal candidate will have at least three years of relevant professional experience in social justice-oriented work and/or working with survivors of sexual violence. Experience providing direct support services is preferred. Strong communication skills, organizational skills, and attention to detail are essential. We are looking for someone who is at ease with technology and proficient in Microsoft office, Adobe Acrobat, and Zoom. Familiarity with project management platforms like Asana and Slack are an asset. This team member should be comfortable working on the issue of sexual abuse in detention and be able to work sensitively and respectfully with trauma survivors and people who have different backgrounds and experiences from themselves. They should be willing to work inside detention facilities. We would be particularly excited to hear from people with experience with incarceration -- or other experience with the criminal legal system -- either personally or through a loved one.

The position is a full-time, salaried position. The salary is $52,000 – $55,000. Benefits include employer paid health, dental, vision, and life insurance; employer contribution to 403(b) retirement plan, equivalent to 7% of employee’s salary (begins at six months of employment); 23 days of paid vacation and 11 paid holidays per year; 12 paid sick days per year; access to JDI’s contractual therapist for confidential support as needed; and a paid sabbatical program for employees after 10 years of employment.
