RePublic Schools is a network of high-performing public charter schools based in Nashville, TN and Jackson, MS with a mission to reimagine public education in the South and prepare all of our scholars to graduate from college. In addition to providing a world-class traditional academic curriculum, we empower our students to be change-makers by teaching them to code – starting in the 5th grade.

Despite the fact that our scholars come from traditionally underserved communities (approximately 85% identify as low-income, and nearly 95% as students of color), we have seen them defy the odds to achieve outstanding results. RePublic’s schools have scored in the top 5% of all open-enrollment public schools across the state of Tennessee for both student growth and absolute achievement – making ours the first (and only) charter schools in state history to achieve this dual distinction.

We are looking for a Dean of Students (DOS) in Nashville, TN for the 2018-19 school year in one of RePublic’s flagship middle schools. What You’ll Do

Overview

At RePublic, we believe that strong, authentic relationships are the foundation for strong school and classroom culture rooted in sky-high expectations for kids. The Dean of Students (DOS) is the culture leader of the school, and is charged with ensuring that the school has the systems and processes in place that enable all stakeholders - staff, students, and families - to work together to create a school-wide culture of safety, consistency, and structure such that joy, positivity, empathy, and love of learning permeate every space in the building.

Reporting directly to the Principal and serving as a critical member of the school-based leadership team, the Dean of Students designs and manages both proactive and reactive interventions to ensure that (a) teachers are able to hold scholars to consistently high behavioral and academic expectations, and (b) scholars develop the skills and habits necessary to make choices that uplift the school community.

Responsibilities

  • Cultural Leadership + Management
  • Work in partnership with the Principal to design a vision that establishes a positive, productive, academic, creative, and structured school-wide culture
  • Design and train all staff members in the school to consistently implement a shared behavior management system with meaningful incentives and consequences
  • Design and hold staff accountable to implementing airtight school-wide systems and processes related to student culture with fidelity
  • Create and facilitate staff professional development sessions designed to empower teachers to build strong relationships with students, employ best-in-class classroom management practices to hold high expectations, and build partnerships with families
  • Lead staff efforts to ensure all students have excellent attendance and arrive at school on time, and work aggressively with students and parents to ensure excellent attendance
  • Collect, carefully document, and effectively communicate accurate data related to school culture to drive school-wide priorities and assess the impact of culture systems and interventions
  • Own the school’s character development program and ensure it builds and reinforces positive self-identity and necessary character strengths in scholars such that scholars choose actions which contribute to a powerful school community
  • Lead recognition assemblies, parent workshops, family and community service events, and other school-wide culture-building activities
  • Cultural Systems + Student Interventions
  • Establish and manage systems in the school’s Dean of Students Office that enable scholars to reflect, demonstrate ownership of choices, and action plan for the future
  • Respond to and manage follow-through on next steps and communication when students are referred by teachers to the Dean of Students Office such that learning time is maximized, relationships are repaired, and culture remains intact
  • Work with teachers, students, and families to create, manage execution of, and track progress against tiered support plans for scholars who need additional interventions to meet behavioral expectations at the school
  • Work with teachers, students, and families to rebuild relationships and trust after moments when this trust has been breached
  • Manage, respond to, and own the follow up on any serious student behavioral infractions which impact the school community

Who You Are

You can speak knowledgeably about our mission, and demonstrate a commitment to our educational model. You understand that educational inequity is more pronounced in the South than anywhere else in the nation, and you want to work with RePublic in part because of our commitment to this region.
  • A school culture guru. You have at least 3-5 years of teaching experience with a demonstrated track record of building strong student and family relationships to drive exceptional student outcomes. You nerd out over parent communication, believe that kids will rise to meet high expectations of the adults in their lives, and that teachers of all backgrounds have the ability to develop authentic relationships with kids that lead to trajectory-changing outcomes.
  • A no-nonsense nurturer. People know you mean business when it comes to maintaining high expectations for kids, and believe that your refusal to lower the bar comes from an authentic place of love and mutual respect.
  • A sweater of the small stuff. You know that adult actions - big and small - communicate what we believe kids are capable of, and that intervening early prevents large culture breaches later.
  • A systems creator. You know that culture works because of consistency, and because kids and adults trust that we will keep true to our promises. Because of that, you leverage your personal organizational skills to design systems related to school culture that ensure safety and enable airtight communication and follow through - and you evaluate their effectiveness using data.
  • A bridge builder. You seek to understand the motivations and barriers of students, staff, and families, and leverage this emotional intelligence to inspire others to action. You manage and resolve conflicts with finesse, hear and validate all sides, strive to build consensus, but don’t shy away from making tough calls.
  • A growth-minded tinkerer. You are self-aware and humble enough to understand where you rock, where you need to pick up your game, and how this impacts the people you lead. You seek feedback constantly because you’re hungry to get better, and you take extreme ownership of the outcomes of the people you coach and manage.
  • A gritty problem-solver. You keep it cool when things are crazy, approach problems with viable solutions, and know when you need to roll up your sleeves to support your team.
  • Other qualifications:
  • A bachelor’s degree with a preference for a graduate degree in a related field.
  • Valid teaching certification in TN, MS, or in states with reciprocity not required, but strongly preferred.
