First Star is seeking a mission-driven First Star National STEAM Academy Director, to use their expertise, vision, and knowledge to develop, oversee, and implement the inaugural First Star National STEAM Academy, led by technology, and driven by social justice. First Star is seeking a detail-oriented, enthusiastic, and motivated National STEAM Academy Director. We are looking for someone who has a passion for youth, technology, and equity with exceptional organizational and technical skills to help facilitate and coordinate interactive virtual workshops and events for teenage foster youth that will include community partners and guest speakers.

The National STEAM Academy Director’s core responsibilities include 1.) Organizing workshops, supplemental learning experiences and working alongside partners/universities to build out experiential learning experiences for our youth 2.) Retaining students, hiring and supervising staff, liaising with university officials, and managing overall budget 2.) Providing case management for participating students in collaboration with the adults involved in the student’s foster youth matters 3.) Liaising with community stakeholders to recruit students, design and implement curriculum, and engage the national community.

Primary Responsibilities:

❖ Partner with the Chief Executive Officer in developing plans based on the National STEAM Academy goals

❖ Engage in strategic partnerships with government, school districts, universities and other child welfare stakeholders pertaining to the National STEAM Academy

❖ Organize and run meetings and formal presentations for stakeholders;

❖ Build upon existing relationships;

❖ Plan, develop and implement strategies for the fulfillment and realization of initiatives focused on the Academy’s national presence, its growth and development to ensure its viability over time;

❖ Formulate action plans and provide direction in order to implement approved strategies;

❖ Anticipate and assess situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action as appropriate;

❖ Use analytical and planning skills to ensure deadlines are met, reports filed and other benchmarks of projects/proposal progress are fulfilled;

❖ Communicate updates either verbally or in writing with project stakeholders;

❖ Project solutions to a variety of problems using sound judgment and discretion;

❖ Prepare executive summaries covering relevant contemporary information as well as specific research as deemed necessary/ relevant, and disseminate as appropriate;

❖ Prepare and/or contribute to the preparation of reports, proposals, briefings, presentations, and drafts of high-level correspondence on organizational and strategic issues, as appropriate;

❖ Perform other related duties as requested.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years of relevant experience. A master’s degree in a STEAM field is preferred.

❖ Familiarity with child welfare landscape and K-12 education;

❖ Experience working with youth, leading sessions with young people, facilitating events for young people

❖ Working knowledge of the tenets that comprise social justice and how to implement related programming and curriculum;

❖ Sensitivity and respect for transition-age foster youth, and groups with diverse socio-economic backgrounds, ethnicities, religious backgrounds, cultural backgrounds, disabilities, and sexual orientations;

❖ Experience in strategic planning, as well as handling complex, diverse, large-scale projects;

❖ Excellent communication and intrapersonal skills suited to interact with senior-level individuals and the board of directors;

❖ Ability to encourage innovation and positive change in education curriculum and programming;

❖ Demonstrated operational and strategic leadership success;

❖ Ability to set strategic direction and design and implement effective organizational policies and programs;

❖ Skills in collaboration, managing change, and building consensus;

❖ Ability to gather, assemble, analyze and evaluate facts, evidence, data, and other information to draw reasonable and fair conclusions and make sound decisions and recommendations;

❖ Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality;

❖ Superior interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills;

❖ Relevant experience with foster youth organizations, education or universities;

❖ Strong Google Suite skills (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Calendar, Forms) and Microsoft Suite skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint);

❖ Ability to work under ambitious timelines in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment;

❖ Passion for the mission and goals of First Star.
