The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, the region's largest grantmaker and permanent charitable endowment, is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Research Fellow for Reconciliation. The Community Foundation’s mission is to inspire, support, inform, listen to and collaborate with the people and organizations in Greater New Haven to build an ever more connected, inclusive, equitable and philanthropic community.

In 2021, The Foundation launched Stepping Forward, a three-year supplemental funding commitment of $26 million to address the widespread immediate community needs caused by COVID-19 and to advance equity in Greater New Haven.

FLSA Status:                      Non-Exempt

POSITION:

The Research Fellow for Reconciliation will be an integral part of a larger project. The ultimate goal is to deliver a comprehensive plan that will be implemented by The Foundation for the purposes of:

  1. Identifying historical elements of systemic racism within The Foundation
  2. Identifying local and national trends that may have influenced the manner in which The Foundation conducted business
  3. Identifying how colonization has contributed to the presence of systemic racism within The Foundation
  4. Identifying funds and donors that may have connections to recently discovered undesired outcomes (racism)
  5. Outlining a path for, at a minimum, addressing and, at best, reconciling any identified missteps of the past

This role requires teamwork, adventurous thinking, unyielding curiosity, and powerful research and writing skills. The Fellow will gain valuable insight into the issues facing philanthropic organizations today and the range of solutions that can help these institutions support their missions and engage broader audiences.

With the definition of “culture” constantly expanding—and with audiences evolving due to larger cultural, technological, and economic shifts—the Fellow will keep a finger on the pulse of societal trends and reference points, and consider how they affect the cultural world, and our work in particular.

This intensive full-time role is designed with mutually beneficial outcomes in mind including the Fellow’s professional development and an important industry contribution. Throughout the engagement, the Fellow will become an integral part of The Foundation team, contributing to a range of projects through writing, research, collaborative brainstorms, and much more.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducting research on our existing funds and performing field and market research, best practice research, and comparative research in other industries.
  • Providing research to support strategic projects, positioning and messaging, strategic planning, audience development strategies, stakeholder research, and peer benchmarking studies, etc.
  • Outlining a description of the culture of the future, internal and external, such that the research findings validate future vision and outcomes.
  • Serve on cross-departmental teams

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Dedication to and passion for a multi-cultural and inclusive world
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in nonprofit organizations, philanthropy and the social sector
  • Commitment to The Foundation’s mission and core values of integrity, diversity, vitality, collaboration, long-term vision, service, accountability and excellence
  • Self-starter with ability to work independently
  • Inspired, creative, rigorous, outside-the-box thinking
  • Research, writing, presentation, and communications skills
  • Outstanding organizational skills, with emphasis on time management, attention to detail and ability to plan, organize and carry out multiple activities
  • Competence with presentation/project management software (i.e. PowerPoint, Keynote, Adobe InDesign, and Excel)
  • Data storytelling skills, including the ability to analyze and extract insights from consumer data sets is a plus.
  • Experience conducting and/or interpreting qualitative and quantitative research is a plus.
  • Experience with project management is a plus.
