California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc. (CRLA) is a nonprofit legal services program founded in 1966 to assist low-income individuals in rural communities. Over 50 years later, CRLA is one of the largest legal aid organizations in California, utilizing its 16 field offices and a nearly $15 million annual budget to provide more than 42,000 low-income Californians with free legal assistance, community education, and outreach programs. CRLA’s mission, “To fight for justice and individual rights alongside the most exploited communities in our society,” has driven the development of innovative programming for vulnerable communities, including farm workers, children, migrants, indigenous communities, and the LGBTQ community.

California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc. seeks a full time LGBTQ Program Director. This management position starts as soon as possible. It is an ideal job for an experienced program manager/attorney who wants to lead a dynamic team committed to community lawyering that provides direct legal aid, systemic advocacy, and leadership development opportunities to rural LGBTQ communities.

In 2007 CRLA launched its LGBTQ program, which has been nationally recognized for its innovative approaches and positive impact. CRLA regularly represents LGBT clients in a variety of types of legal cases, including immigration, employment discrimination, education matters, as well as name and gender change petitions. The LGBTQT program also engages in sustained partnerships with rural community leaders, LGBTQ community centers, and other supportive organizations and agencies committed to breaking down barriers that under and cause entrenched poverty.


The Legal Director of LGBTQ coordinates CRLA’s statewide advocacy for LGBTQ people and leads the implementation of its goal to increase access to justice for low-income LGBTQ people in rural California, particularly LGBTQ farm workers. The Legal Director position reports to the Deputy Director, and manages a team of four staff members, including one LGBTQ immigration fellow.


GENERAL OUTLINE OF THE SCOPE OF WORK:

Management

  • Supervise, support and evaluate program employees
  • Recruit, orient, supervise, train and recognize volunteers/interns
  • Maintain statistics and metrics related to statewide efforts and program impact
  • Collaborate with CRLA Development & Communication department to increase program resources, identify funding needs and priorities
  • Motivate staff/volunteers/interns and board members in accomplishing responsibilities and goals though empowerment and teamwork


Legal

  • Coordinate the LGBTQ Program in the provision of legal assistance and support to the LGBT client population and community-based organizations in CRLA’s service areas.
  • In strategically selected cases, provide direct legal services to LGBTQ clients
  • Organizational Capacity Building
  • Work with LGBTQ Program Team to design, package and deliver training to CRLA staff regarding LGBTQ cultural competency and LGBT-related legal issues.
  • Connect CRLA staff to professional development opportunities that will improve the CRLA’s provision of legal services and advocacy on behalf of LGBTQ clients.
  • Build CRLA’s library of resources on LGBTQ-related legal services and advocacy.
  • Conduct workshops and write articles regarding the provision of legal services to low-income LGBTQ communities to enhance access to quality LGBTQ-related legal assistance nationally.
  • Support efforts to increase and improve LGBTQ-related services and training opportunities in the larger legal aid community.
  • Cultivate key relationships through outreach and collaboration, and work to increase awareness of the organization.
  • Build processes that help CRLA adapt to growth and change and enable staff to evaluate program opportunities and requests against alignment with mission, vision, values and resources.


Community Education

  • Train the LGBT Program Staff to educate communities regarding LGBTQ-related issues and law.
  • Design outreach efforts that reach LGBTQ and non-LGBTQ audiences.
  • Support leadership development among local low-income LGBTQ residents.
  • Engage in media outreach that increases the awareness of LGBTQ rights and support for LGBT people in rural California.


QUALIFICATIONS & QUALITIES of our ideal candidate: We intend to bring a candidate with as many of the following qualifications and qualities as possible:


Required Education and Experience:

  • Admission to the California Bar
  • Direct personal, educational, or professional experience with rural, immigrant, low-income or LGBTQ communities
  • Minimum one year of management experience, preferably in a legal services environment
  • Legal experience involving LGBTQ, poverty, or immigration law
  • Understanding and experience in meeting the needs of the LGBTQ communities, low-income, immigrant or rural communities and ability to empathize with the client community.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Media relations experience
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to interact constructively with diverse populations and staff members
  • Demonstrated experience in tracking and monitoring program outcomes
  • Mediation, negotiation, communication and listening skills
  • Computer and data analysis skills
  • Willingness to travel frequently

 

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bilingual (English and Spanish or other Second Language) preferred
  • Experience in non-profit or public service
