Rewire News Group (rewirenewsgroup.com) is the only media organization exclusively dedicated to reporting on reproductive and sexual health, rights, and justice. We’re a nonprofit, no-paywall, multiplatform newsroom that reaches more than 750,000 readers per month across our site, social channels, newsletter, podcast, and events. Rewire News Group is a remote, independent 501(c)(3) organization and an equal opportunity employer. Black, Indigenous and other people of color; LGBTQIA+ people; and people with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

If you love being creative, understand how critical it is for donors to see the value in our work, and believe in being a lifelong learner, please read on…

Rewire News Group is seeking an enthusiastic fundraiser with expertise in foundation and major donor fundraising and exposure to individual online fundraising, who can bring creativity and resourcefulness to the fundraising operations of a mission-driven nonprofit. The ideal candidate has impeccable attention to detail; can manage multiple projects at once; and is an excellent communicator, collaborator, and coordinator, approaching relationship-building with patience, flexibility, and humor.

Fundraising for us is a team effort—the development manager will report to the business operations SVP, and work closely with the individual (online) giving specialist and the president, as well as support the Board of Directors. The development manager will primarily focus on foundation and major donor relationships, but will also work with the rest of the team to develop new sources of support and take the lead in coordinating foundation and major donor efforts with individual giving efforts to ensure a cohesive approach.

To be successful in this position, the development manager should be able to keep a cool head in a fast-paced, largely remote environment; keep up with our editorial content and the repro landscape in general and find opportunities to build fundraising and communications efforts around it; and take direction from and staff the president as the primary fundraiser at the organization, while also knowing when to take action and advocate for their ideas. In an ideal world, you have sexual health/reproductive fundraising experience—e.g., from a clinic or advocacy org—and know the landscape and players, but at the very least, you commit to learning quickly and operating from the perspective of journalism rather than advocacy.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Take the lead within the organization on our foundation and major donor fundraising efforts—supporting the president and board—while thinking about fundraising holistically;
  • Manage grant reports, letters of inquiries, proposals, and other such donor-facing materials, including coordinating with others for inputs;
  • Maintain a calendar of fundraising communications and campaigns, take point on all written communications for foundations and major donors, and support individual donor efforts;
  • Conduct donor research, identify potential new funding sources, produce briefing materials for meetings, and ensure timely documentation and follow-up;
  •  Work with individual giving specialist to maintain Rewire News Group’s fundraising CRM system and ensure the latest foundation and major donor updates are captured;
  • Contribute to the fundraising strategy and planning;
  • Stay on top of Rewire News Group’s coverage and plans, as well as news in our space overall to look for opportunities;
  • Assist the president and business operations SVP in staffing the fundraising activities of the Board of Directors, including events;
  • Own the fundraising team’s meetings, including the agenda, notes, and follow-ups;
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Note: This role is part of a collective bargaining unit, represented by the Washington-Baltimore News Guild, and specific employment terms are subject to collective bargaining.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least three years of professional fundraising experience with a minimum of one year of foundation grant writing for a nonprofit organization— with a preference for sexual health/repro experience;
  • Exceptional writing and research skills—you can figure out what matters to a funder, pull a 990, tell a story, etc.;
  • Some experience with fundraising events—virtual and/or in-person;
  • Subject matter expertise in reproductive justice issues and stakeholders, or the eagerness to develop such expertise quickly;
  • Education, training, and/or other evidence of educating yourself on fundraising methodologies, best practices, etc.—it may not be traditional but should show your commitment to learning;
  • Proficiency in CRM systems and/or the ability to learn quickly—we currently use Bloomerang;
  • Self-starter with a strong work ethic and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, as well as take direction and critique—all in a remote environment;
  • Comfort with change and pitching in on team efforts—we plan what we can but as a small nonprofit in the news industry, we aren’t strangers to pivoting and shifting priorities;
  • Sharp attention to detail, robust organizational and project management skills, and ability to multitask and work under pressure while staying accountable to goals and high-quality standards;
  • Excellent relationship-building skills with diverse stakeholders, including funders, organizational leaders, and team members at all levels of the organization;
  • Willingness to follow and operate within stated Rewire News Group policies;
  • Flexibility, passion, drive, creativity, inclusivity, and a sense of humor—we deal with heavy things and depend on each other for the energy and positive work environment we all need!
